A hybrid simulated annealing algorithm based on a novel immune mechanism is proposed for the job shop scheduling problem with the objective of minimizing total weighted tardiness. The proposed immune procedure is built on the following fundamental idea: the bottleneck jobs existing in each scheduling instance generally constitute the key factors in the attempt to improve the quality of final schedules, and thus, the sequencing of these jobs needs more intensive optimization. To quantitatively describe the bottleneck job distribution, we design a fuzzy inference system for evaluating the bottleneck level (i.e. the criticality) of each job. By combining the immune procedure with a simulated annealing algorithm, we design a hybrid optimization algorithm which is subsequently tested on a number of job shop instances. Computational results for different-sized instances show that the proposed hybrid algorithm performs effectively and converges fast to satisfactory solutions.

Bio-inspired computation is a field of study that connects together numerous subfields of connectionism (neural network), social behavior, emergence field of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms for complex problem optimization. Bio-inspired computation is motivated by nature and over the last few years, it has encouraged numerous advance algorithms and set of computational tools for dealing with complex combinatorial optimization problems. Black Hole is a new bio-inspired metaheuristic approach based on observable fact of black hole phenomena. It is a population based algorithmic approach like genetic algorithm (GAs), ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm, particle swarm optimization (PSO), firefly and other bio-inspired computation algorithms. The objective of this book chapter is to provide a comprehensive study of black hole approach and its applications in different research fields like data clustering problem, image processing, data mining, computer vision, science and engineering. This chapter provides with the stepping stone for future researches to unveil how metaheuristic and bio-inspired commutating algorithms can improve the solutions of hard or complex problem of optimization.

Black Hole Algorithm and Its Applications

The ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm is a fast suboptimal meta-heuristic based on the behavior of a set of ants that communicate through the deposit of pheromone. It involves a node choice probability which is a function of pheromone strength and inter-node distance to construct a path through a node-arc graph. The algorithm allows fast near optimal solutions to be found and is useful in industrial environments where computational resources and time are limited. A hybridization using iterated local search (ILS) is made in this work to the existing heuristic to refine the optimality of the solution. Applications of the ACO algorithm also involve numerous traveling salesperson problem (TSP) instances and benchmark job shop scheduling problems (JSSPs), where the latter employs a simplified ant graph-construction model to minimize the number of edges for which pheromone update should occur, so as to reduce the spatial complexity in problem computation.
