The scraper conveyor is the unique transport equipment in coal mining face. Its chain drive system is the core subsystem. The dynamic characteristics of the chain drive system need monitoring for a safe mining. Existing monitoring methods include controlling the chain tension, chain speed and motor current. However, the above-mentioned methods have many disadvantages, such as difficult and costly to implement in mining face, due to the poor working environment and the limitations of the scraper conveyor’s structure. This study proposes a monitoring method for the dynamic characteristics of the scraper conveyor on the basis of the speed difference between the head and the tail sprockets. Such an initiative is carried out to study the dynamic characteristics of the scraper conveyor under real working conditions and describe its running state. The speed difference of the head and tail sprockets under different chain speeds, terrains, and loads is monitored and studied. Research results show that the average and maximum speed differences are 0.797% and 0.990%, respectively. Due to the complex terrain, the tighter the scraper chain gets, the smaller the difference of the rotational speed is, compared with the flat working condition. The speed difference under load greatly increases compared with no load. Research results provide data support for the research of the chain drive system dynamics of the scraper conveyor. These results will also provide a new idea for the monitoring of the operating state of the scraper conveyor.

Dynamic Characteristics of the Chain Drive System of Scraper Conveyor Based on the Speed Difference

Ultrawideband (UWB) is a promising wireless radio frequency technology with centimeter-level ranging capabilities. In view of this feature, this article describes a new approach to condition monitoring for the chain of scraper conveyors. An extended Kalman filter (EKF) technology based on UWB is used to locate and track the offset of the two ends of the scraper blades and achieve the purpose of monitoring the health condition of the chain. In addition, considering the presence of environmental noise and the nonline-of-sight factors, the new positioning algorithm uses the more accurate UWB ranging information computed from the range constraint selection method (RCSM) in conjunction with EKF and motion model to select and improve measured values and, finally, to reduce the measurement errors and improve the positioning accuracy. Compared with the results from the weighted least-squares (WLSs) method and EKF estimated without RCSM, the proposed UWB-based EKF technique with RCSM performs better both in accuracy and stability. The experimental results obtained from the proposed method are presented to show good and stable monitoring performance both in normal working conditions and the case of the tilting blade. 

Chain State Monitoring for a Heavy Scraper Conveyor Using UWB-Based Extended Kalman Filter Technique With Range Constraint Selection Method

In order to analyze the dynamic behavior of the ring chain transmission system of the armoured face conveyor,its simulation model was established based on the finite element rigid body method.The dynamic behavior of the ring chain transmission system was simulated with Matlab/Simulink Package.The distribution of velocity,acceleration and tension on the chain was analyzed under normal and chain stuck conditions.The preloading force of the chain transmission system was also discussed.The results can provide some useful reference for the matching of comprehensive mechanized coal mining equipment.

Dynamic Simulation Analysis of the Ring Chain Transmission System of the Armoured Face Conveyor

The scraper conveyor is prone to chain jam, chain break and other failures due to long time operation under heavy load. To ensure its reliable operation, in this paper, using wireless sensor network (WSN) technology, a method of posture monitoring for scraper conveyor based on adaptive extended Kalman filter (AEKF) algorithm is proposed to judge whether the scraper conveyor is abnormal. Firstly, the posture monitoring model of scraper conveyor is established, and then an AEKF algorithm is designed. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulation. The results show that compared with the traditional extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm, the proposed AEKF algorithm is more stable in filtering performance under different environmental noises, and RMSE and MAE are kept below 0.11, which further proves that the proposed method is more suitable for the complex environmental noise conditions with dynamic changes in coal mines, and can meet the accuracy requirements for posture monitoring of scraper conveyors.

Posture Monitoring Method of Scraper Conveyor Based on Adaptive Extended Kalman Filter

In view of the fact that the traditional study of the chain breaking condition of the scraper conveyor only considers the case of two-way simultaneous chain breaking, this paper mainly studies the single-side chain breaking condition and its influence on the longitudinal vibration and swing vibration characteristics of the scraper chain system. Using the tension calculation principle of the point-by-point tension method, each section of the scraper in the study area is taken as a unit. A coupled dynamic model of longitudinal and oscillating vibration of scrapers is established and connected with Voigt model. The dynamic response laws of the longitudinal and oscillating vibration of the scraper before and after the chain fracture under different transportation conditions are numerically simulated. The calculation results show that when there is material behind the broken chain, the longitudinal tension of the chain and the oscillating vibration of the scraper reach the maximum value, and the chain speed fluctuation reaches 543.1 % compared with the normal operating conditions. Only when there is material in front of the broken chain, the longitudinal tension mutation of the chain and the oscillating vibration value of the scraper are weaker than those of the previous working conditions. When there are materials at the front and back of the broken chain, the sudden change of the longitudinal tension of the chain and the oscillating vibration value of the scraper are the minimum, but they also reach twice the normal working condition, and the chain speed fluctuation reached 194.4 %. The research results of this paper provide a theoretical basis for grasping the operation status of the scraper conveyor in the coal mine and predicting the life of the scraper conveyor.
