Product design and manufacturing simulation is a promising research and application area for haptics. By benefiting from its natural human-computer interaction and realistic force/torque feedback, haptics can change the traditional design and manufacturing approaches which are mainly based on physical mock-ups or CAD (Computer Aided Design) modes. This paper provides a detailed and comprehensive survey of haptics for product design and manufacturing simulation in the past 10 years, mainly from 2004-2014, including haptics for product design and shape modelling, haptics for machining simulation, and haptics for virtual assembly and maintenance simulation. The new haptic devices and rendering algorithms involved in this area are introduced, the major research efforts and the typical systems are discussed, and the new ideas and research progresses are investigated. Then, conclusions and future trends are summarized.

By means of specific cases, it illustrates the design and development process of products from concepts to entity model, and then to massive production. Besides, it summarizes the advantages of this method, such as the free-expression modeling, lower costs, shorter development cycle, non-information cut-off, environmentally friendliness and so on.

The Study of Products Design & Developement Using Virtual Clay Modeling System

The course of model making is one of the most primary activities of the design education. In this paper a new method is proposed with the aim of making the model capable of holding and manipulating the shape features in order to support the students in the design process. The key concept of this study is virtual model making system (VMMS) which consists of numerous sets of rules. This experience of model designing and making course was applied, in order to make students learning more interesting and interactive as well as increase the studying efficiency. The system was described briefly and a new teaching method of model making course was introduced.

Application of computer aided industrial design in model making course teaching

Using of free-form shapes has become popular to design complex products in agricultural machinery that have to fulfill engineering requeirments as well as aesthetic criteria. It meets the need of intuition in the process of creative design and computer aided design (CAID). Virtual Model Making System (VMMS) is usually used in the field of automobile styling design, but seldom used in agricultural machinery fields. With some virtual product models, such as the tractor cab body, driver's cabin and the whole appearances introduced in this paper to gain the benefits of model making. Meanwhile, in order to improve the immersion in virtual environment, haptics interface is integrated into the virtual model making system. The presented techniques in this paper can be used for virtual prototyping and many other CAID fields.

Qt-based application of virtual model making system in agricultural machinery

In order to introduce force feedback effect to virtual clay modeling system, a new force feedback model based on material removal rate is presented in this paper. According to the material removal rate and the properties of material, the proposed method can calculate the sculpting haptic force. The force is not only proportional to the removed material volume (Voxel volume), but also to the physical properties of model’s material. This haptic model is well suitable for calculating haptic feedback and sculpting virtual clay model with haptic device, Phantom Desktop. Experiment results demonstrate that the adopted method can add an effective haptics to users and can be used widely in computer-aided industrial design field.
