• Ti-44.5Al-3.8Nb-1Mo-0.2B alloy sheets with different initial microstructures were fabricated by the multi-pass small deformation rolling technique. • The as-rolled sheet deriving from fully lamellar structure possessed a smaller grain size than that from nearly lamellar structure. • Larger deformation was needed for fully lamellar structure to obtain complete recrystallization. Ti-44.5Al-3.8Nb-1Mo-0.2B alloy (TNM) sheets were prepared by hot rolling, and the effect of the initial microstructure on the process was discussed in this work. The as-received TNM alloy billets with nearly and fully lamellar structures were prepared by forging and casting processes (named M1 and M2), respectively. For the as-rolled sheets from M1, the fraction of recrystallization increased gradually with the decrease of reduction per pass based on GOS analysis. Compared with M1, M2 required a larger deformation to achieve complete recrystallization. Meanwhile, the as-rolled sheets from M2 possessed a smaller grain size than that from M1. In addition, the γ-DRX behavior during the multi-pass hot rolling was discussed, and the DDRX was found to play the dominant role in this process. The phase transformation of β/β 0 → α occurred in the 1200 °C rolling process. It was presumed that this transformation was promoted by increasing the rolling temperature, therefore, the volume fraction of the β 0 phase decreased. The α 2 lath decomposed gradually with the increasing of rolling temperature from 1200 °C to 1250 °C, simultaneously, the combination of the adjacent γ laths resulted in the coarsening of γ lath.

Influence of the Ti/Al/Nb ratio on the structure and properties on intermetallic layers obtained on titanium by non-vacuum electron beam cladding

We studied the effects of important ternary elements, such as Cr, Nb, and V, on the plasticity of [Formula: see text]-TiAl crystals by calculating the point defect formation energy and the change in the generalized stacking fault energy (GSFE) surface from first-principles calculations. For all three elements, the point defect formation energies of the substitutional defects are lower in the Ti site than in the Al site, which implies that substitution on the Ti site is energetically more stable. We computed the GSFE surfaces with and without a substitutional solute and obtained the ideal critical resolved shear stress (ICRSS) of each partial slip. The change in the GSFE surface indicates that the substitution of Ti with Cr, Nb, or V results in an increase in the yield strength because the ICRSS of the superlattice intrinsic stacking fault (SISF) partial slip increases. Interestingly, we find that Cr substitution on an Al site could occur owing to the small difference between the substitutional defect formation energies of the Ti and Al sites. In that case, the reduction of ICRSSs of the SISF partial slip and twinning would lead to improved twinnability. We discuss the implications of the computational predictions by comparing them with experimental results in the literature.

Microalloying is an effective approach to improve the mechanical properties of γ-TiAl intermetallic compound. Knowledge about the site occupancy of the ternary alloying element in the crystal lattice of γ-TiAl is highly demanded in order to understand the physics underlying the alloying effect. Previous first-principle methods-based thermodynamic models for the determination of the site occupancy were based on the point defect gas approximation with the interaction between the point defects neglected. In the present work, we include the point defect interaction energy in the thermodynamic model, which allows us to predict the site occupancy of the ternary alloying element in γ-TiAl beyond the point defect gas approximation. The model is applied to the γ-TiAl–Nb alloy. We show that, at low temperature, the site occupancy of Nb atoms depends on the composition of the alloy: Nb atoms occupy the Al sublattice for the Ti-rich alloy but occupy Ti sublattice for the Al-rich alloy. The fraction of Nb atoms occupying Al sublattice in the Ti-rich alloy decreases drastically, whereas the fraction of Nb atoms on the Ti sublattice in the Al-rich alloy decreases slightly with increasing temperature. At high temperature, Nb atoms occupy dominantly the Ti sublattice for both the Ti-rich and Al-rich alloys. The interaction between the point defects makes the Ti sublattice more favorable for the Nb atoms to occupy.
