Lighting porphyrins and phthalocyanines for molecular photovoltaics

Organic semiconducting single crystals (OSSCs) are ideal candidates for the construction of high-performance optoelectronic devices/circuits and a great platform for fundamental research due to their long-range order, absence of grain boundaries, and extremely low defect density. Impressive improvements have recently been made in organic optoelectronics: the charge-carrier mobility is now over 10 cm2 V-1 s-1 and the fluorescence efficiency reaches 90% for many OSSCs. Moreover, high mobility and strong emission can be integrated into a single OSSC, for example, showing a mobility of up to 34 cm2 V-1 s-1 and a photoluminescence yield of 41.2%. These achievements are attributed to the rational design and synthesis of organic semiconductors as well as improvements in preparation technology for crystals, which accelerate the application of OSSCs in devices and circuits, such as organic field-effect transistors, organic photodetectors, organic photovoltaics, organic light-emitting diodes, organic light-emitting transistors, and even electrically pumped organic lasers. In this context, an overview of these fantastic advancements in terms of the fundamental insights into developing high-performance organic semiconductors, efficient strategies for yielding desirable high-quality OSSCs, and their applications in optoelectronic devices and circuits is presented. Finally, an overview of the development of OSSCs along with current challenges and future research directions is provided.

Organic Semiconductor Single Crystals for Electronics and Photonics.

We provide details on the development of instrumentation and methodology to overcome the common difficulties that the vacuum-related techniques face for fabrication of perovskite thin films and perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Our methodology relies on precisely controlling the flow of methylammonium iodide (CH3NH3I, MAI), which has a high-vapor pressure nature, and the deposition rate of metal halides (PbCl2 or PbI2). This hybrid deposition method allows the growth of perovskite films with smooth surface, good crystallinity, high surface coverage, uniform chemical composition and semi-transparency. We also systematically investigated the effects of the evaporation source materials (PbCl2 : MAI versus PbI2 : MAI), substrate temperatures, and post-annealing on the properties of perovskite films, as well as device performances based on this method. By employing a thin perovskite film (<200 nm), the power conversion efficiency of PSC can be as high as 11.5%.

High Photoelectric Conversion Efficiency of Metal Phthalocyanine/Fullerene Heterojunction Photovoltaic Device

We have fabricated efficient heterojunction organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells based on pentacene-doped copper(II) phthalocyanine (CuPc) layer as donor and fullerene (C60) layer as acceptor. The power conversion efficiency of 4% pentacene-doped CuPc∕C60 OPV cell (3.06%) is increased by 77% compared with that of the standard CuPc∕C60 OPV cell (1.73%). The efficiency improvement can be attributed to the higher carrier mobility instead of the stronger photon absorption of the pentacene-doped CuPc layer.

Improving efficiency of organic photovoltaic cells with pentacene-doped CuPc layer

In this paper, we report a high-performance P3HT/PCBM bulk-heterojunction solar cell with a power conversion efficiency of 4.85% fabricated by adjusting the polymer crystallinity and nanoscale phase separation using an ultrasonic irradiation mixing approach for the polymer. The grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, UV/Vis spectroscopic, and atomic force microscopic measurement results for the P3HT/PCBM blend films reveal that the P3HT/PCBM film fabricated by ultrasonic irradiation mixing of the P3HT and PCBM solutions for 10 min has a higher degree of crystallinity, a higher absorption efficiency, and better phase separation, which together account for the higher charge transport properties and photovoltaic cell performance.
