A solid propellant dual pulse rocket motor has a pressure vessel containing two pulse grains separated by a barrier insulator. An igniter assembly disposed at a fore end of the pressure vessel selectively ignites a first pulse grain from a central channel within the grain. The igniter assembly also ignites a second pulse grain by ejecting hot combustion gases onto the fore end of the grain. Using such an ignition arrangement, a dual pulse rocket motor may be constructed using standard off-the-shelf ignition components.

A vehicle body includes an instrument panel, a source of pressure fluid releasable upon the body receiving an acceleration pulse of predetermined amplitude and time, an occupant restraint cushion secured to the instrument panel within a recess thereof in a deflated folded condition, and a releasable covering over the folded cushion. A normally collapsed diffuser tube fits within the cushion and between the folded portion of the cushion and the instrument panel. The tube is connected to the pressure fluid source. The wall of the diffuser tube includes either a plurality of slits normally closed in the collapsed condition of the tube, or a plurality of openings. Upon release of the pressure fluid, the diffuser tube expands and forces the folded portion of the cushion as a unit away from the instrument panel to forcibly release the covering. The slits, which open when the tube expands, or the openings, then inflate the cushion from the pressure fluid source.

A bursting disk is seated with the valve body normally closing the pressure relief passageway and is adapted to rupture permitting fluid to escape from the bag through the pressure relief passageway and into the container surrounding the bag when the pressure in the bag exceeds a predetermined pressure value.

A sealing unit for use in a pressurized gas generator of an automotive safety device for protecting a vehicle occupant from injury during a collision of a motor vehicle. The sealing unit includes a spherical segment formed in a neck portion of the pressurized gas generator, a semi-spherical hollow member having an inner surface and an outer surface facing the spherical segment, an impact responsive explosive charge mounted in a concave portion of the semi-spherical hollow member, and a cap member threadably engaged with a leading end of the neck portion of the pressurized gas generator, the cap member having a bottom wall formed with a bore which is aligned with a pressurized gas discharge outlet of the pressurized gas generator and which communicates with an inflatable confinement of the safety device.

Rupture disc bulkhead structure (24) for the use in a multi-stage rocket motor for missiles or the like wherein the disc (34) is supported by a multiple apertured backup member (36). The disc has a series of bulges (54) which define dimples that conform to the configuration of the apertures (52) in the backup member. Bulging of the disc is carried out under a pressure exceeding that of the withstand pressure of the supported disc. Score lines (42, 44) in the disc aligned with the support segments (56) of the apertured backup member permit the disc to rupture and open at a pressure significantly lower than the back pressure with stand value. The construction provides a bulkhead structure which will withstand back pressures in the range of 2,000 to 10,000 static psig yet full open in a forward direction at a static pressure of no more than about 100 to 400 psig.
