Occupant Use of Manual Lighting Controls in Private Offices

A method and means for creating a daylight harvesting controller with a self calibrating light sensor and an adaptive setpoint that maintains a user determined light level is disclosed herein. The system includes a light sensor for monitoring the ambient light level of a designated control zone and a means to receive and interpret light level adjustment commands created by a user or user surrogate. The system includes means to limit the setpoint to a maximum value, suspend daylighting activity when lights are being adjusted or are turned off, and to delay setpoint capture and the start or resumption of daylighting until an adjustment cycle is completed and the zone light sources have reached a nominally steady state.

An improved occupancy based, object oriented, load management system using anonymous, stateless messaging to communicate real and simulated occupancy detection events between control objects hosted by a plethora of control devices.

Event based occupancy detection

A lighting controls study performed over a three month period provided data that can be used to determine the impact of manual switching and dimming controls on occupant behavior and attitudes and on energy use. Data were analyzed for 58 private offices on a single floor of a modern office building in Boulder, Colorado. Each office was equipped with a ceiling-mounted infrared motion sensor, a dimmer-switch at the door, and a portable dimmer-switch at or near the computer monitor, which controlled two 18-cell parabolic luminaires with three-T8 lamps and electronic dimming ballasts. Occupancy and energy data were collected using a data acquisition system, observations were made of occupant tasks and window blind usage, and surveys were conducted to measure occupant attitudes and preferences toward lighting controls. The results show that:

An improved occupancy detection and load management system wherein a plurality of scout sensors and their surrogates may be networked to a master controller to control the load of a designated control zone. When occupancy is detected by an actual sensor or a sensor surrogate, scout sensors report only that event and each event, regardless of source, has the potential to initiate or sustain the occupied state of the master controller. As a zone becomes unoccupied, event reports stop being sent allowing the master controller to time out and exit its occupied state. Loss or addition of scout sensors does not affect operation as the master does not track individual sensors which additionally allows event reports to be created and sent by plurality of sources including momentary contact buttons, user controls, personal computers, and other building automation systems like fire alarms, security, and access control.
