In a multitasking, multiuser computer system, a server process temporarily impersonates the characteristics of a client process when the client process preforms a remote procedure call on the server process. Each process has an identifier list with a plurality of identifiers that characterize the process. The server process generates a new identifier list which is either the same as the client process's list, or is the union of the server's and the client's lists. Each object in the system can have an access control list which defines the identifiers that a process must have in order to access the object. The operation system has access checking software for enabling a selected process access to a specified object when the identifiers for the process match the list of identifiers in the access control list of the specified object. The server can therefore access all objects accessible to the client while the server is working for the client. The server can restore its original identifier list after completing the services that it performs for the client.

The system and method of this invention provides an access control list which spans across object boundaries in an object oriented database. In addition to providing read and write access permissions, the access control list provides execute semantics which apply to the execution of methods in an object oriented database. Within the entries of the access control lists, each of the permissions for read, write, and execute can be assigned separately to each of a number of ids representing user ids or group ids. Upon request for access to the data by the user, the user id of the user and the group ids for which the user is a member are searched for within the entries to determine whether the user has the privileges to perform the operation requested against the objects. In addition, the access control policies are inherited from an object's superobject; resulting in a least privilege for the object.

An object based operating system for a multitasking computer system provides objects which represent the architecture or interrelationships of the system's resources. Access to certain objects is required in order to use corresponding resources in the system. All objects have a consistent data structure, and a consistent method of defining the operations which apply to each type of object. As a result, it is relatively easy to add new types of system objects to the operating system. The object based operating system supports multiple levels of visibility, allowing objects to be operated on only by processes with the object's range of visibility. This allows objects to be made private to a process, shared by all processes within a job, or visible to all processes within the system. An object or an entire set of objects can be moved to a higher visibility level when objects need to be shared. In addition, access to each object is controlled through an access control list which specifies the processes authorized to access the object, and the types of access that are allowed. An object with a restricted access control list can be associated with a "privileged operation", thereby restricting use of the privileged operation to those user processes authorized to access the corresponding object. Waitable objects are used to synchronize the operation of one or more processes with one another or with specified events. The system provides routines for generating new types of waitable objects without modifying the operating system's kernel.

In a pipeline data processing machine having a first unit for execution of instructions running according to a first pipeline and a second unit for storing data from a plurality of ports running according to a second pipeline, the first unit having a result register for holding results including data and address information of a flow of the first pipeline, the present invention provides an apparatus for transferring results in the result register to the second unit. A plurality of registers connected to the result register, each storing the result from at least one flow of the first pipeline and storing control information is provided. Further, a controller in communication with the second unit and the plurality of ports responsive to the control information and a flow of the second pipeline is included for selecting one of the plurality of ports in a first-in, first-out queue as a port to the second unit and for updating the control information.

An internetworking device providing enhanced packet header translation for translating the format of a header associated with a source network into a header format associated with a destination network of a different type than the source network. The device includes a memory for storing an address portion of a received packet header in a first block of buffer locations and the remainder of the received packet in a second block of buffer locations, spaced from the first block of buffer locations by a gap. The gap permits supplemental header information to be written into the buffer when necessary for translation. The device further includes a split memory, having an SRAM portion and a DRAM portion allocated to each buffer, with at least the address portion of a received packet and the gap located in the SRAM portion, so as to optimize the translation performance of the device.

Addressing mechanisms allow permanent, unique indentification of information as objects and an extremely large address space accessible and common to all such systems. Addresses are independent of system physical configuration. Information is identified to bit granular level and to information type and format. Protection mechanisms provide variable access rights associated with individual bodies of information. User language instructions are transformed into dialect coded, uniform, intermediate level instructions to provide equal facility of execution for all user languages. Operands are referred to by uniform format names which are transformed, by internal mechanisms transparent to users, into addresses.
