Flexible electronics have recently gained considerable attention due to their potential to provide new and innovative solutions to a wide range of challenges in various electronic fields. These electronics require specific material properties and performance because they need to be integrated into a variety of surfaces or folded and rolled for newly formatted electronics. Two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as promising candidates for flexible electronics due to their unique mechanical, electrical, and optical properties, as well as their compatibility with other materials, enabling the creation of various flexible electronic devices. This article provides a comprehensive review of the progress made in developing flexible electronic devices using 2D materials. In addition, it highlights the key aspects of materials, scalable material production, and device fabrication processes for flexible applications, along with important examples of demonstrations that achieved breakthroughs in various flexible and wearable electronic applications. Finally, we discuss the opportunities, current challenges, potential solutions, and future investigative directions about this field.

2D Materials in Flexible Electronics: Recent Advances and Future Prospectives.

Solar energy can be utilized in photocatalysis technology to realize light‐driven hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production, a green chemical synthesis route. Designing high‐performance photocatalysts is critical to achieving practical solar H2O2 production. During the past decade, significant research progress is made in photocatalytic materials for H2O2 production. Particularly 2D materials‐based photocatalysts stand out due to their unique physical and chemical properties. This review highlights the intricate relationship between 2D material innovation and photochemical H2O2 production. It starts with the fundamental principles of photochemical H2O2 generation, focusing on crucial steps such as photon absorption, carrier dynamics, surface reactions, and the challenges that 2D materials can solve at each step. Then, various 2D materials‐based photocatalysts for solar H2O2 production are introduced in detail. Engineering strategies to optimize the photocatalytic performance are discussed afterward. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities for designing 2D materials‐based photocatalysts for solar H2O2 production are outlined. This review is expected to inspire the engineering of 2D materials‐based photocatalysts for the green synthesis of H2O2 and the conversion of solar energy to other chemicals.

Engineering 2D Photocatalysts for Solar Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Designing new biochemical sensors and achieving selectivity and high-sensitivity analysis is one of main research directions for immunoassays. Herein, a liposome-amplification photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunoassay was developed using ultrathin mesoporous bismuth chloride oxide nanosheets (BiOCl MSCN) for the highly selective and sensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Based on good photocurrent response of BiOCl MSCN toward dopamine, a liposome-conjugated secondary antibody loaded with dopamine was added for specific recognition in the presence of CEA. After the lysis treatment, the liberated dopamine was injected into the three-electrode electrolytic cell to enhance the photocurrent of BiOCl MSCN. Under the optimized conditions, the constructed liposome-mediated PEC immunoassay showed high sensitivity against CEA, with a dynamic response in the linear range of 0.05 ng mL−1 to 100 ng mL−1 and a detection limit of 35 pg mL−1. The present study proposes a new approach to the liposome-mediated PEC immunoassay constructed on ultrathin mesoporous BiOCl nanosheets, which can be used to target further the study of the sensing mechanism.

Highly sensitive ratiometric biosensors have attracted much attention in biomarker detection, but most rely on single-mode signals, which can affect accuracy. The development of new principles and methods for dual-mode ratiometric sensing can enhance detection accuracy. Herein, the zinc(II) meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin/MXene (ZnTCPP/Ti3C2Tx) hybrids with phosphate-induced stimuli-responsive behavior are used to develop a novel dual-mode fluorescent/electrochemiluminescent (FL/ECL) ratiometric biosensor. The composites exhibit FL quenching and enhanced ECL behavior involving dissolved O2. The FL quenching of ZnTCPP/Ti3C2Tx is caused by energy transfer (EnT) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET) from ZnTCPP to Ti3C2Tx. While the introduction of MXene compensates for the inadequate conductivity of ZnTCPP, facilitating electron transfer, which further makes the surface ZnTCPP more capable of activating O2 to produce singlet oxygen (1O2), thereby generating enhanced cathodic ECL. Furthermore, phosphate ions (PO43−) can interact with the Ti sites of ZnTCPP/Ti3C2Tx, leading to competition for coordination with ZnTCPP, which in turn detaches ZnTCPP, resulting in enhanced FL and reduced ECL. On the basis of the phosphate-induced stimuli-responsive behavior, the dual-mode FL/ECL ratiometric biosensing of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is achieved through ALP-catalyzed production of PO43− cascade effect with ZnTCPP/Ti3C2Tx. The linear detection range for ALP is 0.1–50 mU/mL, with a detection limit as low as 0.0083 mU/mL. This proposed ZnTCPP/Ti3C2Tx composites with stimuli-responsive behavior is expected to provide new ideas for the development of high-sensitivity dual-mode ratiometric biosensors with promising applications in the precise detection of important biomarkers.

Emerging highly selective MXene-based membranes have drawn a greater scientific interest in the field of water treatment due to their ion-selective and controlled molecular transport characteristics. However, MXene-based membranes have limitations in water treatment due to the difficulties including permeability-selectivity trade-off, swelling, fouling, oxidation, etc. Thus, a better understanding of the rational structural design principles of the membranes and their separation mechanisms are essential to further their development in water treatment. This review provides a concise overview of the key timeline in the fabrication of MXene-based membranes, the membrane characterization approaches used to understand their structure-property correlations, and the present difficulties in synthesizing high-performance MXene-based membranes. To overcome these challenges, new designing approaches are comprehensively reviewed to enhance the permeability, selectivity, stability, and antifouling properties of MXene-based membranes. These approaches include physical intercalation, chemical cross-linking, membrane surface modification, etc. Then, the separation mechanisms involved in the membranes in water treatment are presented, followed by the related applications. Looking forward, the perspective is provided on the future research directions for further advancing the membranes. This timely review may help to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial needs of MXene-based membranes for water treatment.

Nanoconfinement enabled non-covalently decorated MXene membranes for ion-sieving

Although two-dimensional (2D) materials have grown into an extended family that accommodates hundreds of members and have demonstrated promising advantages in many fields, their practical applications are still hindered by the lack of scalable high-yield production of monolayer products. Here, we show that scalable production of monolayer nanosheets can be achieved by a facile ball-milling exfoliation method with the assistance of viscous polyethyleneimine (PEI) liquid. As a demonstration, graphite is effectively exfoliated into graphene nanosheets, achieving a high monolayer percentage of 97.9% at a yield of 78.3%. The universality of this technique is also proven by successfully exfoliating other types of representative layered materials with different structures, such as carbon nitride, covalent organic framework, zeolitic imidazolate framework and hexagonal boron nitride. This scalable exfoliation technique for monolayer nanosheets could catalyze the synthesis and industrialization of 2D nanosheet materials.
