As a novel polymer, polyurethane (PU) has been widely applied in leather, synthetic leather, and textiles due to its excellent overall performance. Nevertheless, conventional PU is flammable and its combustion is accompanied by severe melting and dripping, which then generates hazardous fumes and gases. This defect limits PU applications in various fields, including the leather industry. Hence, the development of environmentally friendly, flame-retardant PU is of great significance both theoretically and practically. Currently, phosphorus-nitrogen (P-N) reactive flame-retardant is a hot topic in the field of flame-retardant PU. Based on this, the preparation and flame-retardant mechanism of flame-retardant PU, as well as the current status of flame-retardant PU in the leather industry were reviewed.

Synthesis and characterization of bio‐based intumescent flame retardant and its application in polyurethane

Hollow glass microsphere (HGM) /organic silicon resin composite materials with different quantity of HGM were prepared by in-situ hydrolytic polymerization. The hydrolysis reaction of silicone resin was carried out at the same time with the surface treatment of HGM by the silane coupling agent. It has been found that HGM was treated by silane coupling agent and the silicone resin was hydrolyzed on the surface of HGM. Such in-situ polymerization method solves the poor compatibility between HGM and silicone resin. And then the composite materials were cured by hydrosilylation. The composite material has low dielectric constant (2.40) and good heat resistance. Such new HGM/organic silicone resin composite material is expected to be used for integrated circuit packaging material.

Adding flame retardant into leather is an effective way to improve the flame resistance of leather products In this paper, a Nitrogen-Phosphorus Intumescent (NPI) flame retardant was synthesized and then added to the fatliquoring process to modify leather The effect of NPI flame retardant on the flame-retardant properties of leather was investigated using Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI), smoke density, vertical combustion, cone calorimeter tests, and SEM The results revealed that LOI of leather modified with NPI flame retardant increased with the increase of flame retardant The flame and flameless combustion time of the modified leather was effectively reduced Compared with unmodified leather, HRR of the modified leather with 6% NPI flame retardant decreased from 8032 MJ/m2 to 6345 MJ/m2; the peak HRR dropped from 10871 MJ/m2 to 7723 MJ/m2 Moreover, the fire growth index of the modified leather with 6% NPI flame retardant is close to half of that of the unmodified sample The results certified the enhancing effect of NPI flame retardant added in the fatliquoring process on flame retardancy of leather samples

Acrylic Nanocomposites Modified by Biobased Itaconates: Mechanical Properties, Oil Resistance, and Heat Resistance

The invention relates to a preparation method of a carbon nanotube modified flame-retardant waterborne polyurethane coating and adhesive. The preparation method comprises the following steps: firstly,preparing a modified heat-conducting filler by utilizing a coupling agent, deionized water, tannic acid and a boron nitride nanosheet layer; then preparing a component A by utilizing polymer polyol and the modified heat-conducting filler; finally, adding a modifier, a polyol chain extender, a cross-linking agent and a filler polymerization chain to the component A, isocyanate and dibutyltin dilaurate to prepare polyurethane A, and adding a tackifier to the polyurethane A to prepare the carbon nanotube modified flame-retardant polyurethane coating and adhesive. The obtained polyurethane coating and adhesive have the outstanding advantages that the combustion smoke performance is better reduced, and the pressure-sensitive performance is improved.
