Digital Shearography Speckle Pattern Interferometry (DSSPI) is a non-destructive testing technique, which has a wide range of applications in industrial field due to the merits of non-contact, fast response, full-field measurement and high sensitivity. However, in the real application, the loading methods and parameters usually depend on the experience of the operator, which affect the effectiveness and accuracy of the test. Based on this background and the principle of DSSPI, a model using finite element analysis software and Matlab is established to simulate the defects detections of aluminum plate and composite laminates under different loading conditions. The simulation covers loading methods, shearing direction, shearing amount, loading intensity, defect size, defect depth and defect position. In order to quantify the testing effect, a parameter named the deviation D is first defined. And through the parameter D, the simulation system can evaluate the system detection ability. The work in this paper can provide systematic guidance for the choice of loading methods and parameters in the real DSSPI experiment system.

The effect of loading methods and parameters on defect detection in digital shearography

So far, researchers have used several methods to calculate stress concentration factors. Such methods are categorized into three groups including analytical, numerical and experimental. Analytical methods are generally employed for very easy and non-complicated problem while numerical methods can be used for different and complicated geometries without considering time and cost limitations. In present study, stress concentration factors calculation was carried out in perforated plates under tensile loading using finite elements numerical method. Ultimately, some solutions were assessed and presented to reduce and optimize these factors and some economic and practical concepts were offered based on numerical analyses and modeling. In these structures, stress concentration can be decreased by such actions as material change, thickness change and the shells with variable thickness so that impact of the mentioned parameters were analyzed and assessed here in details. By an assessment on different methods of stress concentration reduction, the optimal method for stress concentration reduction was presented in perforated plates under tensile.

Evaluation and analysis of the stress concentration factor reduction techniques on perforated plates using finite element method

Shearography has proved to be a highly effective nondestructive testing (NDT) method, especially when it comes to composite and polymer materials used in automotive, aerospace engineering, nuclear and oil industries. Although its application in material testing and material research already has achieved acceptance in research, its applications need a highly considerations in limitations and its parameters. In this paper the application of digital shearography in the defect detection of polymer materials is studied. In this regard, a proper set-up of shearography is presented. A polyethylene plate with several defects in different sizes and depths have been made and tested with the presented set-up. The shearograms then have been compared to evaluate the shearographic system in defect detection. The effects of shear size and system of thermal loading have also been studied.

Application of digital shearography for non destructive testing of materials with thermal loading

Material properties of composite panels and woodwork are greatly influenced by surface or inner defects.It is necessary to use nondestructive testing methods during the detection process.Artificial defects were made on surfaces and inside panels to simulate real defects.The electronic shearography speckle pattern interferometry method was used for nondestructive testing of pine wood samples.Different shearing values were evaluated during the process.When detecting surface defects,the pixel calibration method was used to get defect information for defects of 6mm,5mm,and 3mm diameters.Also the thermal loading method and the phase shifting technique were adopted to provide a detection process for inner,invisible defects.The defects which were close to the surface could be quickly and easily quantitatively detected.The whole detection set-up was easy and ran in real time.The results agreed well with actual defects.Therefore the proposed method is feasible.
