Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis of Ti3AlC2 MAX phase from mechanically-activated Ti/Al/graphite powder mixture

It is widely known that the special performances and extensive applications of the nanoscale materials are determined by their as-synthesized structures, especially their growth sizes and morphologies. Hereinto, titanium carbides, which show brilliant comprehensive properties, have attracted considerable attention from researchers. How to give full play to their potentials in the light-weight manufacture, microwave absorption, electromagnetic protection, energy conversion and catalyst areas has been widely studied. In this summarized article, the synthesis methods and mechanisms, corresponding growth morphologies of titanium carbides and their further applications were briefly reviewed and analyzed according to their different morphological dimensions, including one-dimensional nanostructures, two-dimensional nanosheets and three-dimensional nanoparticles. It is believed that through the investigation of the crystal structures, synthesis methods, growth mechanisms, and morphology characterizations of those titanium carbides, new lights could be shed on the regulation and control of the ceramic phase specific morphologies to meet with their excellent properties and applications. In addition, the corresponding development prospects and challenges of titanium carbides with various growth morphologies were also summarized.

The Synthesis, Structure, Morphology Characterizations and Evolution Mechanisms of Nanosized Titanium Carbides and Their Further Applications.

In-situ formation of TiC, Ni3Ti and Ti2(Ni,Al) with CNTs reinforced Ti-based composite coatings were fabricated by laser alloying processing. The effect of laser specific energy on the microstructure, micro-hardness and wear property of the composite coatings were studied. The results showed that the composite coatings exhibited free from cracks and pores. Cypress leaf-like and flower-like TiC dendrites, as well as block-like Ti2(Ni,Al) and rod-like Ni3Ti intermetallic compounds were in-situ formed and distributed uniformly in the coating. With the increasing of laser specific energy, TiC dendrites coarsened and amount of TiC reduced. The micro-hardness and wear resistance of the coatings first increased and then decreased with the increasing of laser specific energy. When laser specific energy was controlled with 4.167–5 kJ/cm2, coatings with high micro-hardness and wear resistance were obtained. Wear resistance of the coatings were 2.3–6.9 times of that of substrate. Wear behavior of the dominant wear mechanism of the composite alloying coatings was adhesive wear, however, the Ti6Al4V substrate exhibited serious abrasive wear, adhesive wear and plastic deformation.

Fabrication of CNTs–TiC–Ti2(Ni,Al)–Ni3Ti reinforced Ti-based composite coating by laser alloying processing

High-density SiC-TiB2 composites were fabricated using the displacement reaction spark plasma sintering/field-assisted sintering technology (SPS/FAST) and SiC, B4C, TiC, and Si powders. The reaction process was performed in a narrow time frame compared hot pressing. The SiC-TiB2 composites were sintered with precursor SiC at various pressures to determine the effects of processing with SPS/FAST. The composites completed synthesis during SPS/FAST processing, which occurs more quickly than hot pressing. SEM, STEM, and Raman spectroscopy are used to show the conversion and microstructure. The composite of 53.6 wt.% SiC and 46.4 wt.% TiB2 has 99 % theoretical density, hardness of 26.4 GPa, and fracture toughness of 5.12 MPa m1/2.

The formation mechanism of nanocrystalline TiC from KCl–LiCl molten salt medium

The formation mechanism of TiC particles in a Ni-Ti-C system were revealed by using differential thermal analysis (DTA), XRD, and SEM to identify the reaction products in different temperature ranges. The results indicated that the synthesis mechanism of TiC in Ni-Ti-C system was complex; several reactions were involved in the combustion synthesis of TiC-Ni composite. The Ni-Ti intermediate phases play important roles during the formation of TiC. Moreover, the influence of heating rate on the size range of TiC was also discussed.

Formation Mechanism of Spherical TiC in Ni-Ti-C System during Combustion Synthesis.

The invention relates to a TiN-particle-reinforced nickel-based composite material and a preparation method thereof. The material comprises TiN particles and the balance a base body alloy, wherein thevolume fraction x of the TiN particles is greater than 0 and less than 10%, and the base body alloy is any one of nickel-based alloys. The TiN particles are formed by TiN-Ni-C precast block green bodies. The TiN-Ni-C precast block green bodies are composed of Ni powder, Ti powder and C powder. According to the TiN-particle-reinforced nickel-based composite material and the preparation method thereof, through introduction of the TiN particles, yield strength and tensile strength of the nickel-based alloy are effectively improved, and meanwhile, good plasticity is maintained. By means of an adopted traditional casting technology, preparation of the composite material is achieved; the technology is simple, efficient, low in cost, wide in application scope and capable of achieving near-net forming of parts; and meanwhile, the content and appearance of TiN can be flexibly adjusted by adjusting the mass ratio of precast blocks.
