Influence of travel speed on microstructure and mechanical properties of wire + arc additively manufactured 2219 aluminum alloy

This study introduced a novel magnetic-field regulation method in metallic additive manufacturing to achieve the refined grain structure and enhanced mechanical properties without post-treatment and composition changes. As a showcase material, the Ti6Al4V alloy was fabricated using direct energy deposition under the static magnetic field (SMF). It is found that the transverse SMF of 0.55 T can effectively regulate the microstructure with twisted prior-β grains (strong <001> orientation to weak <110> orientation) and discontinuous α grain boundaries. The tensile test shows a significant improvement of tensile elongation (ε f ) in both longitudinal and transverse directions with a slight strength decrease. GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT IMPACT STATEMENT A magnetic field assisting laser additive manufacturing approach was developed to modulate the microstructure for Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The resulting refined β grains and discontinuous α grain boundaries (GBs) improve the ε f significantly.

Enhanced mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V alloy fabricated by laser additive manufacturing under static magnetic field

In this paper, Ni-based alloy coating was prepared on pure iron substrate by steady magnetic field assisted laser cladding technology. The influence mechanism of steady magnetic field on the Ni-based coating was investigated by analyzing the macro-morphology, phase composition, microstructure, element composition and properties of the coatings, respectively. The results reveal that external magnetic field can restrain the surface fluctuation of the coatings. It has no effect on the phase composition of the coatings. Compared with the coating prepared without magnetic field assistance, the grains of the coatings prepared under the magnetic induction intensities of 0.1 T, 0.15 T and 0.2 T are all refined. The solid solubility of the γ-Ni matrix is also increased. Hard phases CrB in the microstructures appear clustered aggregation and preferential orientation with the increase of the magnetic induction intensity. The application of steady magnetic field is beneficial to reduce the number of cracks on the surface and improve the microhardness of the coatings. The coating exhibits the best comprehensive property under the magnetic induction intensity of 0.2 T. Under the action of steady magnetic field, the electromagnetic braking effect and the thermoelectric magnetic fluid effect can both influence the laser cladding process. The surface morphology of the coating is mainly affected by the electromagnetic braking effect. The solidification microstructure is mainly controlled by the thermoelectric magnetic fluid effect. 

Effect of steady magnetic field on microstructure and properties of laser cladding Ni-based alloy coating

The invention discloses a real-time simulation method for a laser three-dimensional printing process, and belongs to the field of laser forming manufacturing and rapid prototyping. Existing laser forming technology screening methods depend on a large amount of experimental data, and are long in experimental period and high in cost. The method provided by the invention can simulate the laser three-dimensional printing processes of different technological parameters in real time. The technological parameters are prejudged before experimental processing to screen out the appropriate technological parameters. According to the method provided by the invention, the development speed of the laser forming technology can be greatly improved, and the development cost can be reduced.

Real-time simulation method for laser three-dimensional printing process

The invention discloses a laser material addition manufacturing method and device of a congruent axialite metal component. An electromagnetic field is used for regulating a laser rapid solidificationprocess; the laser material addition is carried out to manufacture the congruent axialite metal component; the external field non-contact type intervention is carried out on the microstructure level;and the metallurgical bonding between layers in a forming process is improved. According to the laser material addition manufacturing method and device, an electromagnetic field auxiliary device is used for regulating the laser rapid solidification process, thus inducing the transformation of a columnar crystal orientation isometric crystal and improving the defects in a metal material addition manufacturing process; and the part forming process is completely in a CET transformation zone by adjusting the strength and distribution of the magnetic field, thus obtaining the congruent axialite metal component with excellent performances. The congruent axialite metal component manufactured by the method and device has an isotropy characteristic, reduces crystallization cracks, improves part mechanical performances and can serve as a high-quality part to be applied to the field of equipment manufacturing industries such as automobiles, ships and aerospace.

The invention discloses a method for manufacturing metal part solidification structure by a non-contact control added material and a magnetron metal 3D printing device. An electromagnetic field is applied in the quick solidification process of metal 3D printing; under the effect of the electromagnetic field, thermocurrent can be generated on a quickly solidified solid/liquid interface; the thermocurrent and the magnetic field are interacted to generate thermal electromagnetic force for triggering flowing of a melt; the end part of a dendritic crystal is shorn after suffering from the effect of the force to cause fragment of the dendritic crystal to form a lot of new crystal nucleus; and on the other hand, the temperature gradient of the front edge of the solid/liquid interface is slowed down through flowing of the melt, so that the constitutional supercooling of two phase regions is increased, the nucleation rate is increased. The method refines grains, improves the morphology of the grains, enables the structure to become uniform and compact, and realizes the structure control of metal 3D printing parts.
