With some popular tracking methods for free surface, simulations of several typical examples are carried out under various flow field conditions. The results show that the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method is very suitable in simulating the flow problems with a free surface. A viscous liquid droplet with an initial velocity impacting on a solid surface is simulated based on the SPH method, and the surface tension is considered by searching the free surface particles, the initial impact effect is considered by using the artificial viscosity method, boundary virtual particles and image virtual particles are introduced to deal with the boundary problem, and the boundary defect can be identified quite well. The comparisons of simulated results and experimental photographs show that the SPH method can not only exactly simulate the spreading process and the rebound process of a liquid droplet impacting on a solid surface but also accurately track the free surface particles, simulate the free-surface flow and determine the shape of the free surface due to its particle nature.

Droplet collision with cold solid surfaces is a fundamental phenomenon observed in low-temperature processes. In this work, a single droplet impacting on a cold surface was investigated by analyzing changes in droplet shape and dimensions recorded with a high-speed camera. At low surface temperatures (−5°C and −10°C), the droplet spreads in a very short period upon impact and then retracts, but to a diameter larger than that at room temperature, dependent on surface material property and texture. Higher impact velocity expands the spreading diameter and promotes the retraction to an extent, but at lower surface temperature (i.e., −20°C) the droplet is quickly frozen with smaller change in diameter on the stainless-steel surface rather than on the Teflon plate. The change of droplet shape upon impacting on a 30° inclined surface was also studied. After droplets collide with a wall,they either break up,rebound,or adhesion occurs.The result depends on droplet size,incident velocity and angle,wall roughness,temperature,and so on.To study this problem,after considering the above factors,a droplet-wall collision model was constructed.Combined with the Euler-Lagrange two-phase model,the mechanics of collisions between single droplets,multiple droplets and walls were simulated.The computational results were as expected and in good agreement with experimental results,which shows the accuracy and reasonableness of the model used.
