Thermodynamic characteristics and their effects on single cavitation bubble dynamics are important to elucidate the physical behaviors of cavitation phenomena. In this study, experimental and numerical methods were utilized to explore the thermodynamic effects on single cavitation bubble dynamics under various ambient temperature conditions. A series of experiments was performed to generate a single cavitation bubble at ambient temperatures between 20 and 80 °C using a laser-induced method and a high-speed camera to observe the dynamic behaviors of bubbles. By increasing the ambient temperature, a nonspherical bubble shape with a jet flow at the bubble rebound stage was observed. Next, the numerical simulation results in terms of the bubble radius and bubble shape were validated with the corresponding experimental data. Generally, the results exhibited reasonable agreement, particularly at the later collapse and rebound stages. Critical hydrodynamic and thermodynamic mechanisms over multiple oscillation stages at different ambient temperatures were analyzed. The bubble behaviors and their intensities were numerically quantified with respect to the bubble radius, collapsing time, internal pressure, internal temperature, and phase transition rate parameters. The results showed that the maximum bubble radius, first minimum bubble radius, and collapsing time increased with an increase in the ambient temperature. Nevertheless, the peak values of the internal pressure and internal temperature decreased with an increase in the ambient temperature. Generally, the bubble collapsed less violently at high temperatures than at low temperatures.

Thermodynamic effects on single cavitation bubble dynamics under various ambient temperature conditions

In the present review, complexity in multibubble sonoluminescence (MBSL) is discussed. At relatively low ultrasonic frequency, a cavitation bubble is filled mostly with water vapor at relatively high acoustic amplitude which results in OH-line emission by chemiluminescence as well as emissions from weakly ionized plasma formed inside a bubble at the end of the violent bubble collapse. At relatively high ultrasonic frequency or at relatively low acoustic amplitude at relatively low ultrasonic frequency, a cavitation bubble is mostly filled with noncondensable gases such as air or argon at the end of the bubble collapse, which results in relatively high bubble temperature and light emissions from plasma formed inside a bubble. Ionization potential lowering for atoms and molecules occurs due to the extremely high density inside a bubble at the end of the violent bubble collapse, which is one of the main reasons for the plasma formation inside a bubble in addition to the high bubble temperature due to quasi-adiabatic compression of a bubble, where “quasi” means that appreciable thermal conduction takes place between the heated interior of a bubble and the surrounding liquid. Due to bubble–bubble interaction, liquid droplets enter bubbles at the bubble collapse, which results in sodium-line emission.

Multibubble Sonoluminescence from a Theoretical Perspective

Abstract The objective of this paper is to reveal the influence of different surface geometric conditions on the dynamic behavior characteristics of a laser-induced bubble collapse. A high-speed camera system was used to record the oscillation process of the laser-induced bubble on plane solid walls with different roughness and a wall containing reentrant cavities full of water or gas. The focus is on the quantitative analysis of the morphological characteristics of the cavitation bubble near the solid wall under different surface forms during the first two oscillation periods. The results show that the dimensionless ratio γ, defined as the distance from the center of the bubble to the wall divided by the maximum radius of the bubble, has a great influence on the change of the cavitation shape in the direction of the vertical wall. Different surface geometries without gas in our cases have no significant effect on the collapse time of cavitation bubbles. While for the surface containing gas, the direction of movement of the bubble accompanying the microjet will greatly change during the collapse of the cavitation bubble, and the collapse time seems to be independent of the dimensionless ratio γ. These achievements shed the light for engineering to avoid the damage of the microjet caused by designing suitable surface geometry.
