Emerging mega-trends (e.g., mobile, social, cloud, and big data) in information and communication technologies (ICT) are commanding new challenges to future Internet, for which ubiquitous accessibility, high bandwidth, and dynamic management are crucial. However, traditional approaches based on manual configuration of proprietary devices are cumbersome and error-prone, and they cannot fully utilize the capability of physical network infrastructure. Recently, software-defined networking (SDN) has been touted as one of the most promising solutions for future Internet. SDN is characterized by its two distinguished features, including decoupling the control plane from the data plane and providing programmability for network application development. As a result, SDN is positioned to provide more efficient configuration, better performance, and higher flexibility to accommodate innovative network designs. This paper surveys latest developments in this active research area of SDN. We first present a generally accepted definition for SDN with the aforementioned two characteristic features and potential benefits of SDN. We then dwell on its three-layer architecture, including an infrastructure layer, a control layer, and an application layer, and substantiate each layer with existing research efforts and its related research areas. We follow that with an overview of the de facto SDN implementation (i.e., OpenFlow). Finally, we conclude this survey paper with some suggested open research challenges.

A Survey on Software-Defined Networking

Guaranteeing end-to-end QoS provisioning in SOA based SDN architecture: A survey and Open Issues

In an overloaded MU-MIMO system with hybrid beamforming that supports a very large number of users, user scheduling is necessary as the base station (BS) cannot simultaneously serve such a large number of users. Since hybrid beamforming provides a new resource to schedule, i.e. beams, user pairing becomes a joint optimization on user selection and beam selection, which is computationally demanding. In this paper, a low-complexity two-stage user scheduling scheme considering both the inter-user channel correlation and the channel energy is proposed. The idea is motivated by the fact that both the orthogonality between the user channels and the channel energy can affect the system achievable sum rate in a MU-MIMO system. Therefore, we propose to firstly sort the users from the perspective of channel orthogonality, and then carry out user and beam selection within a narrowed range for channel energy maximization. Simulation results validate the proposed scheduling strategy not only has a significant advantage in reducing computational complexity, but also achieves higher sum rate than other non-exhaustive schemes.

A low complexity two-stage user scheduling scheme for MmWave massive MIMO hybrid beamforming systems

With increasing number of mobile phones and smart devices, it has become hard to manage the networks proactively as well as reactively. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging technology that promises to solve majority of the challenges faced by the networks in current times. SDN is based on decoupling of data plane and control plane. SDN has a generalized control plane for all networking devices of the network which makes it simple and easy to configure devices on the fly. This paper surveys how Software Defined Networks evolved to be one of the most preferred technology of contemporary times. The architecture and working of all the planes of SDN have been discussed. SDN finds application in variety of areas, some of which have been highlighted in this paper. SDN faces many security threats in each of its planes. The major security challenges are also presented in detail at the end of the paper.

A Survey of Applications and Security Issues in Software Defined Networking

Noncoherent detection schemes are an appealing and low-complexity alternative in multi-user massive MIMO uplink systems compared to classical coherent detection algorithms, since no actual channel knowledge is required at the receiver. For noncoherent multi-user detection to function, the induced power at the base station is utilized to separate the different users. However, spatial separation is impossible when the users are located in the far-field of the receiving antenna array. Consequently, noncoherent detection fails in such scenarios. To this end, beamspace techniques can be applied, focusing the energy of the incident wave to a smaller subset of the receive antennas and enabling again the noncoherent detection scheme. This paper analyzes the beamspace capabilities of a dielectric lens and an analog beamforming network applied at the receiver. Furthermore, a sub-array architecture is proposed, relaxing the design requirements for practical implementation. It is shown that noncoherent detection in combination with beamspace techniques performs comparably to channel-estimation-based detection. In addition, the sub-array architecture revealed a significant performance enhancement accompanied by a reduced user separability.

A Noncoherent Massive MIMO System Employing Beamspace Techniques

QoS-guaranteed energy saving routing strategy using SDN central control for backbone networks

This paper consider the problem of obtaining the channel state information (CSI) in downlink massive MU-MIMO systems. As a key technology of future wireless communication, massive MIMO has attracted widespread interest, however, amount of the CSI required became a bottleneck for practical application, especially for FDD transmitting method. In this paper, we propose a novel transmitting scheme, combined user-grouping, intra-group user-scheduling and downlink MU-MIMO precoding, which can reduce the amount of CSI feedback. Our results indicate that the proposed method can reduce the amount of CSI greatly, and have a significant strength with the UEs number increasing.

Downlink transmission scheme for massive MU-MIMO system with reduced CSI

Barrier coverage has attracted much attention in the past few years for its various applications, such as border surveillance and intrusion detection. In these applications, it is critical to achieve a strong barrier to ensure detecting any penetration of intruders in an energy-efficient manner so that the barrier can be covered with as few active sensors as possible. In this paper, we study the target detection problem through collaborative detecting under probabilistic sensing model, and propose a MCSD (minimal coverage set detecting) based on Graph theory, which seeks to achieve a strong barrier with minimal active sensors, prolonging the network lifetime. Finally, comprehensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed strategy improves network lifetime effectively.
