In this conceptual paper we explore the problem of how firms balance profit considerations against their contribution to society and the environmental. We theorize how firms build networks that support green transition, enabling them to reconfigure processes that match sustainability goals and maintain profitable. We explore how building networks for green transition supports firms' transition to more sustainable approaches that support the adoption of, and transition to, green strategies. We extend current theorization of how firms build multi-level B2B networks that support green transition that benefits society and the environment. We suggest three propositions that support the development of a multi-level, multi-value model for building green innovation networks. We identify four critical success factors - embedding technological diversity, developing knowledge sharing mechanisms, embracing open innovation strategies, overcoming resistance to change, − that support this process and help firms overcome value creation frictions and deliver multi-value benefits to society (people) and the environment (planet), whilst enabling firms to make a profit. Our conclusion outlines our contribution and highlights areas for future research.

PurposeThis paper aims to examine how multinational corporations respond to environmental turbulence by adopting a flexible supply chain (SC).Design/methodology/approachThis study adopts a case study in the medical industry to identify effective strategic approaches by taking advantage of new business opportunities and navigating complex business partnerships. This study focuses on medical diagnostic equipment, including computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and X-ray, that involves the suppliers, channel partners and medical users.Findings(1) The market turbulence brought the SC leaders to adopt multiple partnership approaches, i.e. funnel-based and area-based partnerships. (2) Adopting a funnel-based partnership allows the SC to seize new market opportunities. Still, it brought a risk element of SC failure from the flawed selection process and professional misconduct. (3) SC leaders adopted flexible partnerships to help address the risk of professional misconduct and select partners for long-term collaboration.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to emergent literature on social exchange theory by exposing the global SC when the SC leaders set up agility approaches. This paper also extends the discussion on the industrial marketing and purchasing theory, which seeks to promote an active buyer–seller relationship.

Global supply chain resilience with the flexible partnership

Purpose This study aims to investigate the role of interfirm communication on the complementary effect between corporate political action (CPA) and research and development (R&amp;D) investments under transaction costs. Design/methodology/approach A quasi-experiment study design was used, combining business game simulation and a public goods experiment with communication as a controlled variable. A fixed-effect regression analysis was performed on panel data collected from 72 students. Findings The findings indicate that collective CPA is positively and significantly associated with R&amp;D investments, particularly when interfirm communication is present. Conversely, for non-communicating firms, the effect is limited to the relationship between individual CPA and R&amp;D investment. Research limitations/implications Despite advancing the research on political ties and innovation, the study acknowledges limitations related to framing effects and institutional variability. Practical implications The complementary effects indicate that institutional arrangements (i.e. business associations) may foster interfirm communication and cooperation in CPA efforts, mitigating opportunistic behaviours and legitimising CPA strategy towards innovation. Social implications This study contributes to understanding how firms’ political and R&amp;D decisions can positively impact innovation, despite the challenges of ex post transaction costs. Originality/value The positive effect of communication on political action and cooperation on firms’ innovation, even in weak institutional environments, is highlighted. An innovative methodological approach combining business games and economic experiments was used to examine participants’ decisions under transaction costs. 

Corporate political action and R&amp;D investments: complementary effects and the role of communication in overcoming ex-post transaction costs

Innovative design improves the product competitive ability in the market. Radical innovation breaks boundaries of existing technology limitations and market expectations by creating new technological advantages for new product development. However, the existing design methods are not effective for the radical innovation product development. This paper proposes a new method for the radical innovation product design. Technical efficacy is extracted from the patent information. Core function units are identified sequentially through the cluster analysis, importance evaluation and weight mapping. It provides a precise target for the identification of radical problems. Based on the core idea of Ideal Final Result and Breaking Boundary, a multilevel problem identification model is proposed. It identifies radical problems at a high system level based on the performance of problems at different levels. A framework is built for radical problems solving based on the alternative effect technology. Automated effect search tools and effect technologies provide the effective support for fast and creative problem-solving. The alternative effect technology further enhances the richness of solution resources. The proposed method clarifies the direction of radical innovation product design at the problem definition stage, which reduces uncertainties of the design process and increases the radical innovation success rate. The feasibility and effectiveness of the method are verified by redesigning a wave power generator. 

Innovative product design based on radical problem solving


Purpose
Drawing on a sensemaking perspective, this study aims to theoretically and empirically investigate the effects of participative corporate political activity (PCPA) on radical innovation and how regulatory uncertainty and technological uncertainty affect firms’ choice of PCPA as well as its effectiveness on radical innovation.


Design/methodology/approach
Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to test the research model based on survey data collected from 227 Chinese manufacturing firms.


Findings
The results indicate that PCPA has a significantly positive effect on radical innovation. Both regulatory and technological uncertainty are positively related to PCPA. In addition, regulatory uncertainty strengthens the positive relationship between PCPA and radical innovation, whereas technological uncertainty weakens this relationship.


Practical implications
This study reveals that firm managers should be mindful that PCPA is beneficial to firms’ radical innovation activities in China. Additionally, although regulatory uncertainty and technological uncertainty can drive firms to engage in PCPA to cope with the ambiguity they experienced, managers should also be alert to the complicated role of environment forces in enlarging or discounting the positive effect of PCPA on radical innovation.


Originality/value
The findings offer fresh insights into the use of PCPA to manage the uncertain external environment when pursuing radical innovation activities in China.


Environmental uncertainty, participative corporate political activity and radical innovation in China: a sensemaking perspective

In this report, the history of the business partnership between Dell and FedEx since 2005 will be presented, which helps to analyze the business negotiations of the partnership between these two companies. It will first present the basic information and business models of Dell and FedEx as it provides the basic background knowledge of these companies. Then the positions and interests in the collaboration between Dell and FedEx will be analyzed. A detailed description of the interest considerations of these two companies during the development of the Vested methodology is presented, and these terms had a great impact on their cooperation and development. Because of the success of their negotiations and the outstanding achievements of the cooperation between the two companies, their negotiation methods, as well as their cooperation, can be learned by other companies and have an impact on the related industries. The negotiations and cooperation between Dell and FedEx show that entrepreneurs are increasingly looking at long-term business-to-business cooperation in the future, so finding ways to build win-win relationships between companies is a key future trend. And as more and more companies are adopting diversification strategies, business-to-business cooperation is diversified and they can have many business intersections. A formal and win-win contract can help build trust among companies, reap their own benefits and create opportunities for long-term and diversified cooperation in the future.
