A control rod guide frame comprises a self supporting stack of two or more columnar elements defining a central passage. The columnar elements may include mating features that mate at abutments between adjacent columnar elements of the stack. The control rod guide frame is suitably used in conjunction with a control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) operatively connected with at least one control rod, and a nuclear reactor core, in which the CRDM moves the at least one control rod into and out of the nuclear reactor core under guidance of the control rod guide frame. A seal arrangement for providing a seal between a nuclear reactor in-core instrument housing and an instrument contained within the housing includes a lower seal assembly surrounding an outer portion of the in-core instrument housing, an upper seal assembly surrounding an outer portion of the in-core instrument, a seal housing enclosing the lower and upper seal assemblies, and lower and upper compression assemblies positioned on respective ends of the seal housing. The compression assemblies each include a drive nut and a compression collar. The compression collars engage and apply an axial load on the seal assemblies to maintain a reliable seal between the seal housing and the outer portion of the in-core instrument housing, and between the seal housing and the outer portion of the in-core instrument.

A penetration for double pipes through the wall of a prestressed concrete pressure vessel for a nuclear reactor is constructed as follows. The aperture (4) through the concrete wall (3) contains an insert (5) in the form of a sleeve closed by integral caps (9,11) at its two ends. The outer pipe (8) of the double pipe assembly terminates at the outer cap (9), to which it is welded, while the inner pipe (10) continues through inside the insert (5) and is welded (15) to the inner cap (11) of the lining sleeve or insert. Pref. the sleeve (5) has a reinforcing flange (12) at which it is welded to the liner (13). Pref. also cooling tubes (16) are fitted around it. At the outer end, there may be an annular recess (18) in the concrete pressure vessel wall. Used in partic. for grouped penetrations in which a number of double tubes, designed to avoid risk of bursting, pass through a single opening in the vessel wall. In partic. for the concentric double tube assembly for feeding nuclear fuel elements into a pebble bed reactor, for gas ducts and the like. The arrangement enables a highly effective, pressure tight and gas tight construction to be achieved.
