A data acquisition and perusal system and method including a database selection module, a database index generator module and a search module. The database selection module enables selection of a plurality of files for inclusion into at least one selectable database. The database index generator module enables generation of a searchable index of the data contained in the selectable database. The search module enables a search to be performed of the searchable index according to search criteria. The system allows for the capture of HTML data which is automatically indexed without human intervention and has the ability to automatically and accurately locate or “pinpoint,” and highlight specific text or groups of text designated by the user within the resulting database.

This paper discusses methods to generate and display automatically additional hyperlink information to the users of the World Wide Web. Current Web browsers make it hard to predict what will happen if a link is followed: users get different information than they expect, a new window may be opened, a download starts, or the destination object is just not available. Instead of giving an appropriate notification in advance, users have to follow a link, check whether the document contains the expected information, get back, try another link etc. However, usually it is possible to obtain additional hyperlink information from several sources like link anchor tags, the user’s history and Web servers. Furthermore, with little enhancements, Web servers may include even more additional information to the hyperlinks in Web documents. These can be displayed before users select a link to improve navigation and reduce the cognitive overhead. In this paper several types of Web hyperlink information are listed, potential methods to present these facts are compared, the prototype implementation of the proposed concept — called by us HyperScout — is presented, and further developments are discussed.

Systems and methods of processing financial transaction information are provided. In one embodiment, a financial institution runs an index generating software program to generate a downloadable index of images of cleared checks [142]. The account customer uses complementary software to remotely download, search, and display the index of cleared check images, together with the images themselves. In another embodiment, the financial institution periodically runs a software program to generate digital archives of the cleared check images [140] for the account customer. The account customer is provided with secure online access to the digial archives. The account customer may use standard financial bookkeeping software to download and display the cleared check images [140] and associate the cleared check images with transactions in the associated account registers.

The Many Using and Creating Hypermedia (MUCH) systems is based on the Dexter model and treats the storage layer as a semantic net. The MUCH system provides a number of recommended link types for representing application domain concepts, such as thesauri, documents, and annotations. Users of the system are expected to use those link types in the course of authoring meaningful hypermedia. This paper is based on the logs of usage of the MUCH system over 2 years by over 200 people. Contrary to the expectations of the builders of the MUCH system, the users did not exploit the ability to type semantic links. Typically authors used the default link type regardless of their semantic intentions. When a link type other than the default type was chosen, that choice was often inconsistent with the way another user would label a similar link. The system has proven to be useful for authoring conventional documents. Authors, however, were not practically able to produce hypertext documents. Based on these experiences a new system, RICH (Reusable Intelligent Collaborative Hypermedia), has been designed and built which emphasizes rules for typing links and maintaining the integrity of the semantic net.
