Three loop calculations and inclusive Vcb

This paper presents a comprehensive review of both the theory and experimental successes of Quantum Chromodynamics, starting with its emergence as a well defined theory in 1972-73 and following developments and results up to the present day. Topics include a review of the earliest theoretical and experimental foundations; the fundamental constants of QCD; an introductory discussion of lattice QCD, the only known method for obtaining exact predictions from QCD; methods for approximating QCD, with special focus on effective field theories; QCD under extreme conditions; measurements and predictions of meson and baryon states; a special discussion of the structure of the nucleon; techniques for study of QCD at high energy, including treatment of jets and showers; measurements at colliders; weak decays and quark mixing; and a section on the future, which discusses new experimental facilities or upgrades currently funded. The paper is intended to provide a broad background for Ph.D. students and postdocs starting their career. Some contributions include personal accounts of how the ideas or experiments were developed.

Abstract We present the first unquenched lattice-QCD calculation of the form factors for the decay $$B\rightarrow D^*\ell \nu $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>B</mml:mi> <mml:mo>→</mml:mo> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>D</mml:mi> <mml:mo>∗</mml:mo> </mml:msup> <mml:mi>ℓ</mml:mi> <mml:mi>ν</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> at nonzero recoil. Our analysis includes 15 MILC ensembles with $$N_f=2+1$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>N</mml:mi> <mml:mi>f</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> flavors of asqtad sea quarks, with a strange quark mass close to its physical mass. The lattice spacings range from $$a\approx 0.15$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>a</mml:mi> <mml:mo>≈</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0.15</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> fm down to 0.045 fm, while the ratio between the light- and the strange-quark masses ranges from 0.05 to 0.4. The valence b and c quarks are treated using the Wilson-clover action with the Fermilab interpretation, whereas the light sector employs asqtad staggered fermions. We extrapolate our results to the physical point in the continuum limit using rooted staggered heavy-light meson chiral perturbation theory. Then we apply a model-independent parametrization to extend the form factors to the full kinematic range. With this parametrization we perform a joint lattice-QCD/experiment fit using several experimental datasets to determine the CKM matrix element $$|V_{cb}|$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>|</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>V</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>cb</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:msub> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>|</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> . The first error is theoretical, the second comes from experiment and the last one includes electromagnetic and electroweak uncertainties, with an overall $$\chi ^2\text {/dof} = 126/84$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>χ</mml:mi> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> </mml:msup> <mml:mtext>/dof</mml:mtext> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mn>126</mml:mn> <mml:mo>/</mml:mo> <mml:mn>84</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> , which illustrates the tensions between the experimental data sets, and between theory and experiment. This result is in agreement with previous exclusive determinations, but the tension with the inclusive determination remains. Finally, we integrate the differential decay rate obtained solely from lattice data to predict $$R(D^*) = 0.265 \pm 0.013$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>R</mml:mi> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>D</mml:mi> <mml:mo>∗</mml:mo> </mml:msup> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0.265</mml:mn> <mml:mo>±</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0.013</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> , which confirms the current tension between theory and experiment.

Semileptonic form factors for $$B\rightarrow D^*\ell \nu $$ at nonzero recoil from $$2+1$$-flavor lattice QCD

A bstract We present the first determination of V cb from inclusive $$ B\to {X}_c \ell {\overline{v}}_{\ell} $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mi>B</mml:mi> <mml:mo>→</mml:mo> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>X</mml:mi> <mml:mi>c</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mi>ℓ</mml:mi> <mml:msub> <mml:mover> <mml:mi>v</mml:mi> <mml:mo>¯</mml:mo> </mml:mover> <mml:mi>ℓ</mml:mi> </mml:msub> </mml:math> using moments of the dilepton invariant mass, q 2 . These moments are reparametrization invariant quantities and depend on a reduced set of non-perturbative parameters. This reduced set of parameters opens a new path to extract these parameters up to $$ 1/{m}_b^4 $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> <mml:mo>/</mml:mo> <mml:msubsup> <mml:mi>m</mml:mi> <mml:mi>b</mml:mi> <mml:mn>4</mml:mn> </mml:msubsup> </mml:math> purely from data and can potentially reduce the uncertainty on V cb . In this paper, we present our first determination of V cb using this method. Combining the recent measurements of q 2 moments by Belle and Belle II, our default fit gives |V cb | = (41 . 69 ± 0 . 63)·10 − 3 . This result presents an important independent cross check of, and is consistent with, the previous state-of-the-art inclusive determinations using lepton energy and hadronic invariant mass moments.

First extraction of inclusive Vcb from q2 moments

We analyze in detail the angular distributions in $\bar{B}\to D^*\ell \bar\nu$ decays, with a focus on lepton-flavour non-universality. We investigate the minimal number of angular observables that fully describes current and upcoming datasets, and explore their sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) in the most general weak effective theory. We apply our findings to the current datasets, extract the non-redundant set of angular observables from the data, and compare to precise SM predictions that include lepton-flavour universality violating mass effects. Our analysis shows that the current presentation of the experimental data is not ideal and prohibits the extraction of the full set of relevant BSM parameters, since the number of independent angular observables that can be inferred from data is limited to only four. We uncover a $\sim4\sigma$ tension between data and predictions that is hidden in the redundant presentation of the Belle 2018 data on $\bar{B}\to D^*\ell \bar\nu$ decays. This tension specifically involves observables that probe $e-\mu$ lepton-flavour universality. However, we find inconsistencies in these data, which renders results based on it suspicious. Nevertheless, we discuss which generic BSM scenarios could explain the tension, in the case that the inconsistencies do not affect the data materially. Our findings highlight that $e-\mu$ non-universality in the SM, introduced by the finite muon mass, is already significant in a subset of angular observables with respect to the experimental precision.

Lepton-flavour non-universality of $${\bar{B}}\rightarrow D^*\ell {{\bar{\nu }}}$$ angular distributions in and beyond the Standard Model

 , are extracted from semileptonic B decays. The results of the B factories, analysed in the light of the most recent theoretical calculations, remain puzzling, because for both $$|V_{ub}|$$
 and $$|V_{cb}|$$
 the exclusive and inclusive determinations are in clear tension. Further, measurements in the $$\tau $$
 channels at Belle, Babar, and LHCb show discrepancies with the Standard Model predictions, pointing to a possible violation of lepton flavor universality. LHCb and Belle II have the potential to resolve these issues in the next few years. This article summarizes the discussions and results obtained at the MITP workshop held on April 9–13, 2018, in Mainz, Germany, with the goal to develop a medium-term strategy of analyses and calculations aimed at solving the puzzles. Lattice and continuum theorists working together with experimentalists have discussed how to reshape the semileptonic analyses in view of the much higher luminosity expected at Belle II, searching for ways to systematically validate the theoretical predictions in both exclusive and inclusive B decays, and to exploit the rich possibilities at LHCb.
