The concept of tethered satellite system (TSS) promises to revolutionize many aspects of space exploration and exploitation. It provides not only numerous possible and valuable applications, but also challenging and interesting problems related to their dynamics, control, and physical implementation. Over the past decades, this exciting topic has attracted significant attention from many researchers and gained a vast number of analytical, numerical and experimental achievements with a focus on the two essential aspects of both dynamics and control. This review article presents the historic background and recent hot topics for the space tethers, and introduces the dynamics and control of TSSs in a progressive manner, from basic operating principles to the state-of-the-art achievements.

Advances in dynamics and control of tethered satellite systems

Tethered satellite systems (TSS) pose quite challenging problems concerning their modelling, derivation of the equations of motion, numerical simulation of their dynamics, deciding on stability of relative equilibria provided the system moves on a circular orbit around the Earth and the occurrence of chaotic dynamics. Moreover, for the processes of deployment or retrieval of one satellite from or to another satellite certain control strategies, for example time or energy optimal control, are necessary. All these problems are considered in this paper.

The literature review manuscript focuses mainly on five topics, which are related to the space tether control researches: (1) space tether dynamical modelling; (2) tether deployment and retrieval; (3) trajectory generation and control; (4) tether attitude and motion control; (5) tether vibration control and dynamical simulations. With the basic aim of establishing useful sources of fundamental researches in the literature, and high-lighting the previous control methods developed, this paper attempts to provide a contextualised source of references for the further space tether dynamics and control studies.

Coupling dynamics modelling and optimal coordinated control of tethered space robot

This paper presents an analytical model and a geometric numerical integrator for a tethered spacecraft model that is composed of two rigid bodies connected by an elastic tether. This model includes important dynamic characteristics of tethered spacecraft in orbit, namely the nonlinear coupling between tether deformations, rotational dynamics of rigid bodies, a reeling mechanism, and orbital dynamics. A geometric numerical integrator, referred to as a Lie group variational integrator, is developed to numerically preserve the Hamiltonian structure of the presented model and its Lie group configuration manifold. The structure-preserving properties are particularly useful for studying complex dynamics of a tethered spacecraft. These properties are illustrated by numerical simulations.
