The spectrum of doubly ionized xenon has been investigated. The study is based on photographic recordings of xenon spectra in the 490-8900 A range. The number of classified lines has been increased from about 300 to about 1400. The lines have been classified as transitions between 73 even levels belonging to the 5s25p4, 5s25p36p, 4f, 5f and 5s05p6 configurations, and 83 odd levels belonging to the 5s5p5, 5s25p36s, 7s, 5d and 6d configurations. In particular, the classifications include most of the Xe III laser lines. The experimentally observed level structures are compared with the results of Hartree-Fock calculations and least-squares fits. A comparison is also made between the results of the present analysis and the published data on the Xe N4,5 OO Auger spectrum.

The 1S0 level in the 5p4 ground configuration of Xe III has been revised. Parameter values for the 5p4 configuration have been determined by parametric fitting and the eigenvectors used to calculate transition probabilities for magnetic dipole as well as electric quadrupole transitions within the 5p4 configuration. An improved value for the ionization potential of Xe II is used to determine the energies of the 4d105s25p4 1D2- 4d95s25p6 2D5/2 (N5O2,3O2,3 (1D2)) and 4d105s5p5 1P1-4d95s25p6 2D5/2 (N5O1O2,3 (1P1)) Auger transitions in Xe, which are commonly used as reference lines in photoelectron spectroscopy.

Revised Analysis of the 5p4 Ground Configuration of Two-Times Ionized Xe (Xe III) and Reevaluation of Transition Probabilities for Forbidden Lines within this Configuration

We report electron impact widths of 36 lines that belong to the sequence of homologous, doubly-ionized atoms of the inert gases. Only four Ar III lines in this sequence were previously measured and they are in good agreement with the present results. Good agreement is also found between these experimental results and theoretical calculations using a modified semiempirical approach. The average ratio between experimental and theoretical values is 1.06, with a maximum deviation not exceeding ±20%. We have used the present results to investigate the trends of the Stark widths of analogous lines along the homologous sequence.

Stark broadening of spectral lines of homologous, doubly-ionized inert gases

The 5s25p4–5s5p5 transitions of Cs iv, Ba v, and La vi were observed with a sliding spark discharge and a 10.7-m normal-incidence spectrograph. The region of observation was 539–1282 A. The energy parameters derived from least-squares fits to the experimental levels are compared with Hartree–Fock (HF) calculations. The fitted/HF ratios for the 5s25p4 configurations of the ions Te i–La vi are compared with the fitted/HF ratios for the 4s24p4 configurations of the ions Se i–Mo ix.

5s 2 5p 4 –5s5p 5 transitions in Cs iv, Ba v, and La vi

We report on measurements of the line profiles and Stark widths of two (6s 5S– 6 p 5 P ) quintet transitions of Xe III. The measurements are performed in a gas-liner pinch discharge. The spectroscopic measurements are made simultaneously with Thomson scattering that give the plasma conditions of electron density, ne=(0.6– 1.2)×10 18 cm −3 and electron temperature, Te=(3– 8) eV . The line widths of the measured transitions are compared to previous investigations on the same transitions and agreement is found. We give an experimental electron density scaling for the Stark width of these transitions for plasma diagnostic purposes.

Line profile measurements of (4S) 6s 5S–(4S) 6p 5P transitions of Xe III

Analysis of recent observations of the Xe III spectrum has yielded revised and extended identifications for the 5s25p3(4S)6s, 7s, 6p, 5d, 6d and 4f levels. Four of the previously known twenty-two levels have been rejected whereas sixteen new levels have been added. The ionization energy has been determined from isoelectronic comparisons. The value arrived at, 250 400 ± 300 cm-1, is some 9000 cm-1 lower than the presently accepted value.
