A 167-processor computational platform consists of an array of simple programmable processors capable of per-processor dynamic supply voltage and clock frequency scaling, three algorithm-specific processors, and three 16 KB shared memories; and is implemented in 65 nm CMOS. All processors and shared memories are clocked by local fully independent, dynamically haltable, digitally-programmable oscillators and are interconnected by a configurable circuit-switched network which supports long-distance communication. Programmable processors occupy 0.17nmm2 and operate at a maximum clock frequency of 1.2 GHz at 1.3 V. At 1.2 V, they operate at 1.07 GHz and consume 47.5nmW when 100% active, resulting in an energy dissipation of 44 pJ per operation. At 0.675 V, they operate at 66 MHz and consume 608nmuW when 100% active, resulting in a total energy dissipation of 9.2 pJ per ALU or MAC operation.

It is well recognized in the literature that the fully-synchronous design style, once the best choice due especially to the simplicity of its design flow, is not suitable for present-days systems, which contain many more gates compared to their predecessors, and has to be superseded to meet the new needs of the industry. The alternative solution that has enjoyed more success in industry and the literature consists in breaking down a system into several fully-synchronous modules clocked with independent clocks. Such systems go under the name of Globally-non-Synchronous (GnS) and make no assumption on the phase alignment between the clocks in the individual modules. GnS design styles do not require a globally balanced clock tree and employ special synchronizers to achieve latency-insensitivity. The individual modules, whose sizes are relatively small, remain fully-synchronous, thus easy to design andmaintain. Two main classes of GnS systems have been proposed: the GALS (for Globally-Asynchronous, Locally-Synchronous) design style allows each module to be clocked at its own independent clock frequency; the mesochronous design style constrains all modules to run at the same frequency. GALS systems support per-module Dynamic Voltage-Frequency Scaling (DVFS), but GALS interfaces are complex and introduce high performance penalties; mesochronous systems do not support per-module DVFS but support simpler and faster interfaces. It is well recognized that neither of the two design styles can fully satisfy all the contrasting needs of the electronic industry, and often hybrid solutions are deployed as a trade-off. We propose Globally-Ratiochronous, Locally-Synchronous (GRLS) systems, where GRLS is a design style intermediate between the mesochronous and the GALS design paradigms: local frequencies in a GRLS system do not need to be identical, but are required to be rationally-related (such as one being 3/4 or 2/5 of the other). The periodic properties of rationally-related systems allow the deployment of interfaces that do not use any form of handshake and, thanks to this, are much more performant than GALS interfaces; on the other hand, GRLS supports quantized per-module DVFS. In this work we deploy and analyse all the components of the GRLS design style: the frequency regulation system, the voltage regulation system, and the GRLS latency-insensitive interfaces. We perform a theoretical analysis of DVFS efficiency in different GRLS systems, and then study a GRLS NoC-based platform. We also develop a complete GRLS power management system for a GRLS Network-on-Chip (NoC)-based platform. Experimental results show that GRLS performances are close to those of mesochronous systems and GRLS flexibility is close to that of GALS systems, which results in high figures of merit for GRLS systems. As an example, the GRLS NoC-based platform we study in this work has at least ≈ 21% lower latency-power product compared to alternative mesochronous-GALS hybrid platforms, and respectively ≈ 32% and ≈ 48% better latency-power product compared to mesochronous and GALS platforms.

Globally-Ratiochronous, Locally-Synchronous Systems

In complex embedded applications, optimisation and adaptation of both dynamic and leakage power have become an issue at SoC grain. A fully power-aware globally-asynchronous locally-synchronous network-on-chip (NoC) circuit is presented in this paper. Network-on-chip architecture combined with a globally-asynchronous locally-synchronous paradigm is a natural enabler for DVFS mechanisms. The circuit is arranged around an asynchronous network-on-chip providing scalable communication and a 17 Gb/s throughput while automatically reducing its power consumption by activity detection. Both dynamic and static power consumptions are globally reduced using adaptive design techniques applied locally for each synchronous NoC units. No fine control software is required during voltage and frequency scaling. Power control is localized and a minimal latency cost is observed.

An Asynchronous Power Aware and Adaptive NoC Based Circuit

Low power system-on-chips (SoCs) are now at the heart of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, which are well-known for their bursty workloads and limited energy storage—usually in the form of tiny batteries. To ensure battery lifetime, dynamic voltage frequency scaling (DVFS) has become an essential technique in such SoC chips. With continuously decreasing supply level, noise margins in these devices are already being squeezed. During DVFS transition, large current that accompanies the clock speed transition runs into or out of clock networks in a few clock cycles, induces large ${\text {L}di}{/}{\mathrm {d}t}$ noise, thereby stressing the power delivery system (PDS). Due to the limited area and cost target, adding additional decoupling capacitance to mitigate such noise is usually challenging. A common approach is to gradually introduce/remove the additional clock cycles to increase/decrease the clock frequency in steps, also known as, clock skipping. However, such a technique may increase DVFS transition time, and still cannot guarantee minimal noise. In this paper, we propose a new noise-aware DVFS sequence optimization technique by formulating a mixed 0/1 programming to resolve the problems of clock skipping sequence optimization. Moreover, the method is also extended to schedule extensive wake-up activities on different clock domains for the same purpose. The experiments show that the optimized sequence is able to significantly mitigate noise within the desired transition time, thereby saving both power and energy.

Noise-Aware DVFS for Efficient Transitions on Battery-Powered IoT Devices

This paper presents circuits that enable dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) for fine-grained chip multi-processors to reduce both dynamic and leakage power dissipation. Each processor can run on either a high voltage or low voltage power supply, or disconnect from both. Switching between power supplies is performed dynamically, where scaling decisions are based on each processor's workload, allowing for reduced power consumption without a significant impact on performance. Tradeoffs in performance versus circuit area and supply noise are examined. The DVFS circuits are designed in a wrapper around each individual processor, resulting in a 12% area overhead. DVFS operation utilizing supply voltages of 1.3 V and 0.8 V on a nine-processor JPEG application reduces average energy consumption by 48% while reducing performance by only 8%.
