A major result of the use of the double cantilever beam test to provide a measure of the interlaminar fracture energy in composites subjected to simple Mode I-type loading is the observation that increasing the toughness of the matrix resin by as much as a factor of 20 produced a major (approximately four-fold) increase in interlaminar fracture energy. The data presently analyzed show that, with brittle polymers, resin toughness is fully transferred to the composite, while in the case of tougher polymers the resin toughness is only partially transferred due to the fibers' restriction of the crack tip deformation zone in the polymer, together with their changing of local stress field details. Factors which tend to increase interlaminar toughness are fiber nesting and bridging, as well as fiber breakage and pull-out during crack growth.

Delamination and transverse cracking failure modes of composites have been char acterized by using the width tapered double cantilever beam test and the double torsion test, respectively. The fracture toughness GIC values obtained from the two tests are found to be quite comparable. This indicates that the two failure modes have similar failure mechanisms. The phenomenon of fibers bridging between crack surfaces observed in the tests is also discussed for its relevance to the laminate fracture.

A Comparison of Fracture Toughness of Matrix Controlled Failure Modes: Delamination and Transverse Cracking:

Electrical crack length measurement and the temperature dependence of the mode I fracture toughness of carbon fibre reinforced plastics

In this study, integrated experimental tests and computational modeling are proposed to investigate the failure mechanisms of open-hole cross-ply carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminated composites. In particular, we propose two effective methods, which include width-tapered double cantilever beam (WTDCB) and fixed-ratio mixed-mode end load split (FRMMELS) tests, to obtain the experimental data more reliably. We then calibrate the traction-separation laws of cohesive zone model (CZM) used among laminas of the composites by leveraging these two methods. The experimental results of fracture energy, i.e. GIc and GTc, obtained from WTDCB and FRMMELS tests are generally insensitive to the crack length thus requiring no effort to accurately measure the crack tip. Moreover, FRMMELS sample contains a fixed mixed-mode ratio of GIIc/GTc depending on the width taper ratio. Examining comparisons between experimental results of FRMMELS tests and failure surface of B–K failure criterion predicted from a curve fitting, good agreement between the predictions and experimental data has been found, indicating that FRMMELS tests are an effective method to determine mixed-mode fracture criterion. In addition, a coupled experimental-computational modeling of WTDCB, edge notched flexure, and FRMMELS tests are adopted to calibrate and validate the interfacial strengths. Finally, failure mechanisms of open-hole cross-ply CFRP laminates under flexural loading have been studied systematically using experimental and multi-scale computational analyses based on the developed CZM model. The initiation and propagation of delamination, the failure of laminated layers as well as load-displacement curves predicted from computational analyses are in good agreement with what we have observed experimentally.

A Combined Experimental and Computational Analysis of Failure Mechanisms in Open-Hole Cross-ply Laminates under Flexural Loading.

The width-tapered double-cantilever-beam (WTDCB) specimen configuration used to determine the Mode-I interlaminar fracture energy (IFE) of composites has special advantages for routine development work and for quality-assurance purposes. These advantages come primarily from the simplicity of testing and the fact that the specimen is designed for constant change in compliance with crack length, so that the computation of Mode-I IFE is independent of crack length. In this paper, a simplified technique for fabrication and testing WTDCB specimens is described. Also presented are the effects of fiber orientation and specimen dimensions, a comparison of data obtained using the WTDCB specimens and other specimen geometries, and comparison of data obtained at different laboratories. It is concluded that the WTDCB gives interlaminar Mode-I IFE essentially equal to other type specimens, and that it can be used for rapid screening in resin-development work and for quality assurance of composite materials.
