Li/MgO is one of the most frequently investigated catalysts for the oxidative coupling of methane. Besides catalytic testing, it is also a suitable system to perform surface science experiments and quantum chemical calculations, which is not possible for many other active catalysts. However, the real structure of Li/MgO, the nature of the active center and the structure - activity relationship remain unclear, despite all the research that has been done. The aim of this review is to summarize the available knowledge on Li/MgO to structure and accelerate and improve the ongoing work on this catalytic system.

Kinetic studies of the oxidative coupling of methane over a NaOH/CaO catalyst

Oxidative coupling of methane in a bench scale fixed bed tubular reactor over Mn-Na2WO4/SiO2 catalyst has been studied. Four kinetic models have been considered for oxidative coupling of methane reactions and compared through experimental data, and the best kinetic model has been selected. For removing the heat of reaction, a molten salt bath system surrounding the reactor tube has been proposed. Effects of different factors, such as CH4/O2 ratio, are investigated through experimental and simulation studies. A good agreement has been observed between simulation and experimental data. The reactor behaviors under isothermal and adiabatic conditions have also been simulated.

Summary The main reaction pathways of the oxidative coupling of CH 4 to C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 4 , CO and CO 2 were determined using a Ce/Li/MgO catalyst at 750 ° C. In non-catalytic runs it was found that homogeneous oxidation of CH 4 as well as of CO is neglegible, but the conversion of C 2 H 6 to C 2 H 4 and further oxidation of C 2 H 4 into CO occure as homogeneous gas phase reactions. In the presence of the catalyst CH 4 is oxidized selectively to C 2 H 6 as well as unselectively to CO 2 , which is partly produced also from C 2 H 6 . C 2 H 6 is converted to C 2 H 4 by oxidative dehydrogenation as well as by dehydrogenation. CO is oxidized to CO 2 . The rates of all these reactions were described by power law equations.
