Energy storage systems are playing an increasingly important role in a variety of applications, such as electric vehicles or grid-connected systems. In this context, supercapacitors (SCs) are gaining ground due to their high power density, good performance, and long maintenance-free lifetime. For this reason, SCs are a hot research topic, and several papers are being published on material engineering, performance characterization, modeling. and post-mortem analysis. A compilation of the most important millstones on this topic is essential to keep researchers on related fields updated about new potentials of this technology. This review paper covers recent research aspects and applications of SCs, highlighting the relationship between material properties and electrical characteristics. It begins with an explanation of the energy storage mechanisms and materials used by SCs. Based on these materials, the SCs are classified, their key features are summarized, and their electrochemical characteristics are related to electrical performance. Given the high interest in system modeling and a large number of papers published on this topic, modeling techniques are classified, explained, and compared, addressing their strengths and weaknesses, and the experimental techniques used to measure the modeled properties are described. Finally, SCs are successfully used in the market sectors, as well as their growth expectations are analyzed. The analysis presented herein gives the account of the expansion that the SC market is currently undergoing and identifies the most promising research trends on this field.

Review on reliability of supercapacitors in energy storage applications

Transportation electrification is a promising solution to meet the ever-rising energy demand and realize sustainable development. Lithium-ion batteries, being the most predominant energy storage devices, directly affect the safety, comfort, driving range, and reliability of many electric mobilities. Nevertheless, thermal-related issues of batteries such as potential thermal runaway, performance degradation at low temperatures, and accelerated aging still hinder the wider adoption of electric mobilities. To ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations of lithium-ion batteries, monitoring their thermal states is critical to safety protection, performance optimization, as well as prognostics, and health management. Given insufficient onboard temperature sensors and their inability to measure battery internal temperature, accurate and timely temperature estimation is of particular importance to thermal state monitoring. Toward this end, this paper provides a comprehensive review of temperature estimation techniques in battery systems regarding their mechanism, framework, and representative studies. The potential metrics used to characterize battery thermal states are discussed in detail at first considering the spatiotemporal attributes of battery temperature, and the strengths and weaknesses of applying such metrics in battery management are also analyzed. Afterward, various temperature estimation methods, including impedance/resistance-based, thermal model-based, and data-driven estimations, are elucidated, analyzed, and compared in terms of their strengths, limitations, and potential improvements. Finally, the key challenges to battery thermal state monitoring in real applications are identified, and future opportunities for removing these barriers are presented and discussed. 

Thermal state monitoring of lithium-ion batteries: Progress, challenges, and opportunities

Supercapacitors (SCs) are drawing more and more attention in energy storage applications. This paper aims to discuss the state of the art of application-oriented electrothermal modeling methods for SCs and identify the limitations and future research opportunities. Electrothermal modeling is essential to model-based design, thermal management, and reliability analysis of SCs for energy storage applications. The review provides new perspectives with respect to the existing surveys, which focus mainly on materials, cell voltage balancing, electrical equivalent circuit models, and energy management systems. It covers the main aspects of electrothermal modeling of electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and hybrid SCs, from heat generation mechanisms to different modeling and parameterization approaches. The outcome of the review is an archive of important research work in the topic area and an outlook on future efforts to be made.

A Review on Electrothermal Modeling of Supercapacitors for Energy Storage Applications

Amidst vertical axis wind turbines, Darrieus turbines stand out for their impressive efficiency. However, these turbines encounter a significant challenge regarding their self-starting ability. Therefore, the current study seeks to explore the effects of combining Savonius and Darrieus turbines on the self-starting capability of the Darrieus turbine and propose a new wind turbine design with superior starting torque. Additionally, the study investigates the effectiveness of novel deflectors placed in front of and alongside the hybrid turbine, focusing on increasing the efficiency of the hybrid turbine. For this purpose, numerical simulations are carried out using a two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach to simulate the flow field. The SST k-ω turbulence model is employed to provide closure for the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations. Also, the modeling validation and verification were performed by sensitivity analysis of mesh distribution and time step. The research findings indicated that coupling the Darrieus and Savonius turbines improved the hybrid turbine's self-starting ability, with a 26.91% increase in power coefficient (Cp) at the lowest tip speed ratio (TSR) of 1.45. However, as TSR increases, the hybrid turbine's performance decreases due to the Savonius turbine's limited aerodynamic performance at high TSRs. This issue is solved using front and side deflectors, improving the hybrid turbine's efficiency at the optimum TSR of 2.6 by 30% and 26%, respectively, through increasing wind energy density at the upwind and leeward regions of the turbine. Furthermore, using both deflectors together, known as the double deflector configuration, has shown the best performance at both the lowest and optimum TSR. 

An investigation into the self-starting of darrieus-savonius hybrid wind turbine and performance enhancement through innovative deflectors: A CFD approach

Previous research has proven that placing a disruptive cylinder in front of the Savonius wind turbine’s returning blade can significantly increase the performance of the Savonius turbine. In this study, two-dimensional unsteady simulations with a quadratic pave-type structured mesh showed that the circular cylinder placed in front of the returning blade and next to the advancing blade provides the best performance results at a free flow speed of 5 m/s and a Reynolds number of 100,000. In this study, the comparison with experimental data from another study is utilized. The Savonius turbine is installed with an interfering cylinder in front of the returning blade and next to the advancing blade; the air is tighter on the concave side of the advancing blade. The coefficient pressure difference between the convex and concave sides of the blade increases. The maximum moment is achieved in the turbine with a disturbance cylinder at a configuration distance of S/D 1.4 – Y/D 1.61. The maximum moment coefficient is obtained at the position θ = 15°. The placement of two cylinders with a ratio variation of 0.5 D can significantly influence turbine performance. Results show the turbine provides the highest Power Coefficient when TSR = 0.6. The power coefficient increased by 25.11% compared with that of conventional Savonius turbines. Therefore, it can be concluded that the turbine is the optimal configuration for generating the highest power.
