Kaizen: The key to Japan‚s competitive success

This paper aims to explore synergies between lean production (LP) and six sigma principles to propose a lean six sigma (LSS) framework for continuous and incremental improvement in the oil and gas sector. The Three-dimensional LSS framework seeks to provide various combinations about the integration between LP principles, DMAIC (define–measure–analyse–improve–control) cycle and plan-do-check-act (PDCA) cycle to support operations management needs.,The research method is composed of two main steps: diagnosis of current problems and proposition of a conceptual framework that qualitatively integrates synergistic aspects of LP and six sigma and analysis of the application of the construct through semi-structured interviews with leaders from oil and gas companies to assess and validate the proposed framework.,As a result, a conceptual framework of LSS is developed contemplating the integration of LP and six sigma and providing a systemic and holistic approach to problem-solving through continuous and incremental improvement in the oil and gas sector.,This research is different from previous studies because it integrates LP principles, DMAIC and PDCA cycles into a unique framework that fulfils a specific need of oil and gas sector. It presents a customized LSS framework that guides wastes and cost reduction while enhancing quality and reducing process variability to elevate efficiency in operations management of this sector. This is an original research that presents new and original scientific findings.

Lean management and sustainable practices in Higher Education Institutions of Brazil and Portugal: A cross country perspective

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relevance of Lean Thinking principles implementation around the world, both in industry and services, based on the growing number of published case studies and surveys. A comprehensive review has been conducted on case studies and surveys published between 1990 and 2018 describing Lean Production/Thinking implementations on different countries, classified by year of publication, country and type of company (discrete-industry/process-industry/services) and intervention scope (product/sector). The main findings of this study show that Lean Thinking is a real global (worldwide) and transversal approach to improve organizations’ performance (all types of industries and services). However, several organizations are not yet fully aware of the Lean principles as they do not apply the approach to an entire value stream (i.e. to products or families of products) but only to parts of value streams (i.e. to sectors or areas of the company). The review includes the identification of benefits related to environmental issues that contribute to the sustainability of the organizations.

A model for productivity improvement on machining of components for stamping dies

Enterprise resources planning (ERP) systems attract many attentions from industry sector because of their ability to facilitate and integrate the enterprise operations. However, many expenses accompany the implementation of these systems and consecutive changes which doing a precise and comprehensive performance evaluation a necessary part of this process. These evaluations should consider operational and technical aspects of ERP systems to reflect the effectiveness of them toward the organization's requirements. In this paper, a two-stage data envelopment analysis model (DEA) is presented in order to evaluate the efficiency of ERP systems in such a way that the operational and the technical aspect are evaluated in the first stage and the second stage of DEM model, respectively. Based on the obtained results the ERP systems’ functionality and customizability to the client processes are the two key features that need to be considered by the providers. Furthermore, the findings of parameter sensitivity analysis of the proposed model provide deep and managerial insights into the further usability improvements of ERP systems.
