Diverse Sexual Behaviors and Pornography Use: Findings From a Nationally Representative Probability Survey of Americans Aged 18 to 60 Years.

Common sense suggests that persistence is key to success. In academia, successful researchers have been found more likely to be persistent in publishing, but little attention has been given to how persistence in maintaining collaborative relationships affects career success. This paper proposes a new bibliometric understanding of persistence that considers the prominent role of collaboration in contemporary science. Using this perspective, we analyze the relationship between persistent collaboration and publication quality along several dimensions: degree of transdisciplinarity, difference in coauthor's scientific age and their scientific impact, and research-team size. Contrary to traditional wisdom, our results show that persistent scientific collaboration does not always result in high-quality papers. We find that the most persistent transdisciplinary collaboration tends to output high-impact publications, and that those coauthors with diverse scientific impact or scientific ages benefit from persistent collaboration more than homogeneous compositions. We also find that researchers persistently working in large groups tend to publish lower-impact papers. These results contradict the colloquial understanding of collaboration in academia and paint a more nuanced picture of how persistent scientific collaboration relates to success, a picture that can provide valuable insights to researchers, funding agencies, policy makers, and mentor–mentee program directors. Moreover, the methodology in this study showcases a feasible approach to measure persistent collaboration.

Understanding persistent scientific collaboration

Scientific collaboration is vital to many fields, and it is common to see scholars seek out experienced researchers or experts in a domain with whom they can share knowledge, experience, and resources. To explore the diversity of research collaborations, this article performs a temporal analysis on the scientific careers of researchers in the field of computer science. Specifically, we analyze collaborators using 2 indicators: the research topic diversity, measured by the Author-Conference-Topic model and cosine, and the impact diversity, measured by the normalized standard deviation of h-indices. We find that the collaborators of high-impact researchers tend to study diverse research topics and have diverse h-indices. Moreover, by setting PhD graduation as an important milestone in researchers' careers, we examine several indicators related to scientific collaboration and their effects on a career. The results show that collaborating with authoritative authors plays an important role prior to a researcher's PhD graduation, but working with non-authoritative authors carries more weight after PhD graduation.

Topic-based ranking of authors, papers and journals can serve as a vital tool for identifying authorities of a given topic within a particular domain. Existing methods that measure topic-based scholarly output are limited to homogeneous networks. This study proposes a new informative metric called Topic-based Heterogeneous Rank (TH Rank) which measures the impact of a scholarly entity with respect to a given topic in a heterogeneous scholarly network containing authors, papers and journals. TH Rank calculates topic-dependent ranks for authors by considering the combined impact of the multiple factors which contribute to an author's level of prestige. Information retrieval serves as the test field and articles about information retrieval published between 1956 and 2014 were extracted from web of science. Initial results show that TH Rank can effectively identify the most prestigious authors, papers and journals related to a specific topic.

Free online sexually explicit materials have become the major way for pornography viewers to consume pornographic materials. Most previous content analytic studies have focused on aggression and degradation behaviors in sexually explicit materials. Fewer studies have focused on the prevalence of depictions of individual sexual behaviors, overlooking that pornographic materials not only show viewers individual sexual behaviors but also provide sexual scripts, which contain a series of co-occurring sexual behaviors. Using the network analysis method, the current study examined the co-occurrence patterns of a large number of sexual behaviors depicted in free online sexually explicit materials. The study has revealed the primary sexual script depicted in popular online sexually explicit materials and predicted the potential effects of such a script.

Sexual behavior patterns in online sexually explicit materials: a network analysis

Over the past twenty years, people have seen considerable growth in film industry. There are two common measurements for movie quality, financial metric of net profit and reception metric in the form of ratings assigned by moviegoers on websites. Researchers have utilized these two metrics to build models for movie success prediction separately, while few of them investigate the combination. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze movie success from perspectives of financial and critical metrics in tandem. Here, optimal success is defined as a film that is both profitable and highly acclaimed, while its worst outcome involves financial loss and critical panning at the same time. Salient features that are salient to both financial and critical outcomes are identified in an attempt to uncover what makes a “good” movie “good” and a “bad” one “bad” as well as explain common phenomenons in movie industry quantitatively.

How to Make a Successful Movie: Factor Analysis from both Financial and Critical Perspectives

The neologism, the biblioblogsphere, has emerged in recent years to describe the institutional publication of blogs of libraries and the personal, typically professionally-oriented publication of blogs by librarians. Much literature on this trend has been anecdotal in nature, though a growing body of research literature has emerged in the past several years. This paper contributes to the latter development, reporting the findings from an exploratory study mapping connectivity in the biblioblogosphere, the first part of a planned, extended research study on scholarly communication in the biblioblogosphere. Patterns of interlinking within a sample of 1,606 library blogs were studied. The outgoing links of posts published to these blogs over one year were compared with the URLs of all blogs in the sample. It was found that the majority of the sampled blogs (80%) did not link to any other blog within the sample. Interlinked blogs (20%) tended to cluster according to library type, blog subject or geographical proximity. Approximately 1/3 of these were located within a single massive network consisting of 125 “nodes,” or blogs, while the rest were in dyads and triads, representing networks comprised of two or three blogs, respectively. Findings suggest that the biblioblogosphere conforms to the locally dense, globally sparse structure of blog networks established by previous studies. Personal blogs) are more likely to be located within a network than institutional blogs. These findings suggest that individual bloggers are actively shaping the networked, hyper-linked structure of the library blogosphere, while institutional blogs having less overall impact.

Exploring connections of the biblioblogosphere

Transdisciplinary collaboration is the key for innovation. An evaluation mechanism is necessary to ensure that academic credit for this costly process can be allocated fairly among coauthors. This paper proposes a set of quantitative measures (e.g., t_credit and t_index) to reflect authors’ transdisciplinary contributions to publications. These measures are based on paper-topic probability distributions and author-topic probability distributions. We conduct an empirical analysis of the information retrieval domain which demonstrates that these measures effectively improve the results of harmonic_credit and h_index measures by taking into account the transdisciplinary contributions of authors. The definitions of t_credit and t_index provide a fair and effective way for research organizations to assign credit to authors of transdisciplinary publications.
