The command definition can include, for example, driver object commands to request media type lists and command event lists, create drivers, request service, and release drivers. The command definition can also include, for example, service object commands to release service objects, notify when handling of an event is complete, invoke commands, release work items, suspend work items, resume work items, handle queued events, and cancel queued events. The command definition can also include, for example, client object commands to start a work item, release work items, save work item contexts, restore work item contexts, serialize work items, free work item storage, begin batch processing, and end batch processing.

The front layer machines comprise a server cluster that performs fail-over and dynamic load balancing for both server layers. The operation of the servers on both layers is monitored, and when a server failure at either layer is detected, the system automatically shifts network traffic from the failed machine to one or more operational machines, reconfiguring front-layer servers as needed without interrupting operation of the server system. The server system automatically accommodates additional machines in the server cluster, without service interruption. The system operates with a dynamic reconfiguration protocol that permits reassignment of network addresses to the front layer machines. The front layer machines perform their operations without breaking network communications between clients and servers, and without rebooting of computers.

A communication system featuring a plurality of nodes in which at least one node is implemented with adaptive driver software following a load balancing scheme that takes into account packet characteristics associated with the data traffic load before dynamically distributing the data traffic among multiple communication channels. They are replaced by the TCB fragment structure. The advantages are that many cpu instructions formerly needed to set up the TBD's and to manage them in memory are eliminated. Also, it is faster to send the fragment structure to the controller than to send the TBDs. This is because the fragment structure is a contiguous array and can therefore go to the controller in burst mode.

The fields of the data packet are filtered at the remote component to determine if the at least one condition is satisfied.

Arrangement and method for providing flexible management of a network

A system and method of by pipelining the flow of data in a bus mastered network controller. The concept of successful completion on copy is used. The bus mastering network controller indicates to the CPU that a frame has been successfully transmitted as soon as the data from main memory is copied across system bus to buffer memory in the controller. The driver layer of the network operating system upon receiving the successful completion on copy signal from bus mastering network controller 16 releases its own transmit frame descriptors and buffers associated with the copied frame which enables the lower protocol layer to initiate a new frame transmission while the previous one is still being transmitted. The CPU and bus mastering network controller do not contend for system bus during the setup of the new frame since bus mastering network controller continues transmission from buffer memory. The bus mastering network controller does not wait for a complete indication to transfer the next frame to buffer memory. Rather the next frame is transferred to buffer memory as the previous frame is being transferred to serial side of the controller. This keeps serial side always busy and the data throughput is only limited by the bandwidth capability of the physical link.
