Surface plasmons (SPs) are coherent oscillations of conduction electrons on a metal surface excited by electromagnetic radiation at a metal -dielectric interface. The growing field of research on such light -metal interactions is known as ‘plasmonics’. 1-3 This branch of research has attracted much attention due to its potential applications in miniaturized optical devices, sensors, and photonic circuits as well as in medical diagnostics and therapeutics. 4-8

Nanostructured plasmonic sensors.

Colloidal nanocrystals are nanometer-sized, solution-grown inorganic particles stabilized by a layer of surfactants attached to their surface. The inorganic cores exhibit useful properties controlled by composition as well as size and shape, while the surfactant coating ensures that these structures are easy to fabricate and process. It is this combination of features that makes colloidal nanocrystals attractive and promising building blocks for advanced materials and devices. But their full potential can only be exploited if we achieve exquisite control over their composition, size, shape, crystal structure and surface properties. Here we review what is known about nanocrystal growth and outline strategies for controlling it.

Current progress on the chemical modification of carbon nanotubes.

Optical biosensors have exhibited worthwhile performance in detecting biological systems and promoting significant advances in clinical diagnostics, drug discovery, food process control, and environmental monitoring. Without complexity in their pretreatment and probable influence on the nature of target molecules, these biosensors have additional advantages such as high sensitivity, robustness, reliability, and potential to be integrated on a single chip. In this review, the state of the art optical biosensor technologies, including those based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR), optical waveguides, optical resonators, photonic crystals, and optical fibers, are presented. The principles for each type of biosensor are concisely introduced and particular emphasis has been placed on recent achievements. The strengths and weaknesses of each type of biosensor have been outlined as well. Concluding remarks regarding the perspectives of future developments are discussed.

Electrodics of CCl4 reduction in 1-butyl-3-methylimmidazolium tetrafluoroborate [BMIM][BF4] room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) is reported. A convolutive analysis of the cyclic voltammograms suggests that CCl4 electroreduction follows stepwise (outer sphere) dissociative electron transfer pathway, rather than the sticky dissociative (inner sphere) electron transfer, as in the case of conventional organic solvents. This difference in the mechanism of electron transfer initiated bond cleavage is attributed to the solvent specific effects, namely, stabilization of CCl4•− intermediate radical anion in RTIL, which in turn decreases the electron transfer rate and thus the carbon−halogen bond cleavage rates. Electroreduction of CCl4 in RTIL through outer sphere electron transfer would be a promising pathway for its direct conversion to methane.
