Abstract : A study is reported of the variations in organizational commitment and job satisfaction, as related to subsequent turnover in a sample of recently-employed psychiatric technician trainees. A longitudinal study was made across a 10 1/2 month period, with attitude measures collected at four points in time. For this sample, job satisfaction measures appeared better able to differentiate future stayers from leavers in the earliest phase of the study. With the passage of time, organizational commitment measures proved to be a better predictor of turnover, and job satisfaction failed to predict turnover. The findings are discussed in the light of other related studies, and possible explanations are examined. (Modified author abstract)

Missing in action: Perspectives on employee absenteeism in the South African Police Service

Art reflects reality, in science fiction as well as in everyday praxis. And it provides an entertaining approach to comprehending enduring characteristics of administration. Eighty years ago, Luther Gulick coined the acronym POSDCORB (planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, reporting, and budgeting) to capture the essential elements of public administration. To demonstrate the enduring nature of Gulick’s summation, this article draws parallels between the acronym and the popular novel and screenplay The Martian, a story of space exploration and rescue. The comparison situates the importance of POSDCORB even when describing the frontier of space travel. Applying as well to a trip to Mars as to managing public lands or ensuring food safety, we argue that the routines of public administration are also the routines of rocket science. The comparison provides a contemporary way to teach a classic paradigm.

The science fiction genre has long held a place in popular culture, and has gained significant popularity over the past century. This research examines themes of governance, bureaucracy, policy, and leadership presented in two of the genre's longest-running television franchises, Star Trek and Doctor Who. A grounded theory approach is utilized for a content analysis of all the stories from each franchise that have primary or secondary themes related to governance, bureaucracy, or policy. Results are presented in the context of Goodsell and Murray's framework for examining arts and media for public administration, with a specific focus on applications for teaching.

Fifty Years of Science Fiction Television

Using the Steers and Rhodes (1978) model of absenteeism behavior, this paper examines ability to attend and attendance motivation factors for public and non-profit managers. Attendance motivation factors utilized in this study include public service motivation, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. T-tests and OLS regressions suggest that there are significant differences between absenteeism in the public and non-profit sectors and between genders. The results also suggest that organizational commitment, especially in terms of stakeholdership, is negatively associated with absenteeism. Perceptions of flexibility are found to be positively associated with the number of days missed.
