Gut microbiome-mediated metabolism effects on immunity in rural and urban African populations.
Martin Stražar,Godfrey S. Temba,Hera Vlamakis,Vesla Kullaya,Furaha Lyamuya,Blandina T. Mmbaga,Leo A. B. Joosten,André J. A. M. van der Ven,Mihai G. Netea,Quirijn de Mast,Ramnik J. Xavier,Ramnik J. Xavier,Ramnik J. Xavier +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors uncover a gradient of intestinal microbial compositions from rural through urban Tanzanian, towards European samples, manifested both in relative abundance and genomic variation observed in stool metagenomics.
Desialylation of platelets induced by Von Willebrand Factor is a novel mechanism of platelet clearance in dengue.
Silvita Fitri Riswari,Silvita Fitri Riswari,Rahajeng N. Tunjungputri,Rahajeng N. Tunjungputri,Vesla Kullaya,Fadel M. Garishah,Fadel M. Garishah,Gloria S. R. Utari,Nur Farhanah,Gijs J. Overheul,Gijs J. Overheul,Bachti Alisjahbana,M. Hussein Gasem,Rolf T. Urbanus,Philip G. de Groot,Dirk Lefeber,Ronald P. van Rij,André J. A. M. van der Ven,Quirijn de Mast +18 more
TL;DR: It is shown that adult patients with dengue not only had higher plasma concentrations of plasma VWF antigen and active VWF, but that circulating platelets had also bound more VWF to their membrane and the amount of platelet-VWF binding correlated well with platelet count.
Host genetic regulation of human gut microbial structural variation.
Daria V. Zhernakova,Daoming Wang,Lei Liu,Sergio Andreu-Sánchez,Yue Zhang,Angel J Ruiz-Moreno,Haoran Peng,Niels Plomp,Ángela del Castillo-Izquierdo,Ranko Gacesa,E. A. Lopera-Maya,Godfrey S. Temba,Vesla Kullaya,Sander S. van Leeuwen,Ramnik J. Xavier,Quirijn de Mast,L. A. Joosten,N. P. Riksen,Joost H.W. Rutten,Mihai G. Netea,Serena Sanna,C. Wijmenga,Rinse K. Weersma,Alexandra Zhernakova,Hermie J. M. Harmsen,Jingyuan Fu +25 more
TL;DR: The findings of this study demonstrate that genetic associations across the human genome and bacterial metagenome can provide functional insights into the reciprocal host–microbiome relationship.

Desialylation of Platelets by Pneumococcal Neuraminidase A Induces ADP-Dependent Platelet Hyperreactivity.
Vesla Kullaya,Marien I. de Jonge,Jeroen D. Langereis,Christa E. van der Gaast-de Jongh,Christian Büll,Gosse J. Adema,Dirk Lefeber,Amelieke J. H. Cremers,Blandina T. Mmbaga,Phillip G. de Groot,Quirijn de Mast,André J. A. M. van der Ven +11 more
TL;DR: Findings show that soluble NanA can desialylate platelets, leading to platelet hyperreactivity, which can be prevented by neuraminidase inhibitors.

Immunological factors linked to geographical variation in vaccine responses.
Marloes M A R van Dorst,Jeremia Pyuza,Gyaviira Nkurunungi,Vesla Kullaya,Hermelijn H. Smits,Pancras C.W. Hogendoorn,Linda J. Wammes,Bart Everts,Alison M. Elliott,Simon P. Jochems,Maria Yazdanbakhsh +10 more
TL;DR: Through the identification of causal pathways that link environmental influences to vaccine responsiveness, it might become possible to devise modulatory compounds that can complement vaccines for better outcomes in regions where they are needed most.
