The accumulation of knowledge associated with cancer biology continues to progress at a phenomenal rate; the electronic availability of research papers and news items makes access to new discoveries almost instantaneous. International meetings present opportunities to share scientific knowledge and develop collaborations, as well as fuelling competition between groups, to drive research forward. As a primary researcher or graduate student, the ability to adapt research projects to take advantage of new technological and scientific developments in the field of cancer biology requires a broad knowledge of subjects outside the primary areas of research. Similarly, an undergraduate or newcomer to the field must initially familiarise themselves with established principles before facing the daunting task of processing the vast amount of specialised knowledge available. The editors of The Molecular Biology of Cancer have identified the need for a book that assimilates critical aspects of cancer biology into a single resource to function as a reference tool and teaching aid applicable to both students and researchers alike.

The book is divided into 18 chapters and a glossary. Each chapter is authored by experts in the field and is prefaced by a list of the key points covered in that section. The chapters are organised according to a common format; of particular note is the arrangement of the bibliographies at the end of each chapter where references are grouped according to the concepts discussed. This format facilitates navigation of the information presented in each section, allowing the book to be used as a reference tool. This is ideal for established cancer biologists requiring clarity of specific subjects as well as those using the book to learn topics from first principles. It is in catering to this dual audience that the book is particularly strong.

The Introduction presents cancer as a genetic disease that requires the acquisition of the classical ‘hallmarks' by cancer cells to promote tumour development. Basic concepts are clearly presented in this chapter that would be redundant to an established cancer biologist but invaluable to a newcomer to the field and of great importance in the context of the book as a teaching resource. Chapter 2 considers the clinical features of lung, breast and prostate cancer and determines the context in which the molecular biology described in the subsequent chapters should be considered; namely, in terms of disease manifestation.

The interplay between the environment and genetic lesions associated with cancer is considered in Chapter 3; the book then focuses on the molecular basis of the cellular processes relevant to the cancer cell. The mechanisms fundamental to the normal cell cycle and DNA replication are described in Chapter 4; Chapters 6, 7 and 10 discuss the role of oncogenes, tumour suppressor genes and genetic instability, respectively. Chapter 11 describes the role of epigenetic factors in gene expression and the influence of post-translational modifications on protein expression. There is, however, comparatively little discussion of the role of signal transduction in cancer development. The vast nature of this field makes consideration of every pathway impossible in this context but a more thorough overview could be achieved if a whole chapter were devoted to this topic. The RAS – MAPK pathway and PI3K – Akt pathway are highlighted as examples of critical signalling modules in cell growth as part of Chapter 5 but could be included on their own. This is especially relevant given the potential of signalling pathway components as drug targets.

At times, the complex nature of the mechanisms and theories discussed necessitates detailed descriptions resulting in large blocks of text. However, large, monochrome figures clearly summarise these descriptions or are used in place of them where possible. Additional colour plates illustrate signalling pathways and clinical images that would be unclear in black and white. Information that is relevant to the chapter but would be incongruous in the main text, such as highlights of key experiments, is presented in additional text boxes. Tables are also used to present lists of information, such as protein classifications, in an organised format that would not be possible in the main text. The conclusion of each chapter summarises the topics covered and suggests questions that still remain in the field.

Chapters 15, 16 and 17 address the issues of cancer diagnosis, treatment and patient care and set the book apart from a general molecular biology reference by considering the clinical implications of understanding this subject. Chapter 17 is especially poignant in its highly informative discussion of the management of the palliative care of cancer patients. The title of the book does not imply that these topics would be included; however, it is information I feel is essential to complete the comprehensive reference guide that the editors aimed to produce. The development of therapies specifically targeting the molecules responsible for the transformed phenotype demands a detailed understanding of the mechanisms behind normal cellular processes. This knowledge should not be gained at the expense of an appreciation of the impact that bench-based research has on the patient in hospital. An awareness of the human implications of gaps in our understanding of cancer development should drive research.

The pace of cancer research means that the latest knowledge of highly specialised concepts is essential but, equally, the cross talk between different subject areas means a solid understanding is essential to take advantage of the plethora of new data available. Essentially, The Molecular Biology of Cancer is a book that can be used as an introduction to the subject as well as a platform on which to assimilate new information in the context of established principles. This book is applicable to both graduate and undergraduate students and, in the context of a research laboratory, this book would be an excellent resource as a reference guide for scientists at all levels.

Alginate microparticles as oral colon drug delivery device: A review

Abstract The use of nanotechnology has the potential to revolutionize the detection and treatment of cancer. Developments in protein engineering and materials science have led to the emergence of new nanoscale targeting techniques, which offer renewed hope for cancer patients. While several nanocarriers for medicinal purposes have been approved for human trials, only a few have been authorized for clinical use in targeting cancer cells. In this review, we analyze some of the authorized formulations and discuss the challenges of translating findings from the lab to the clinic. This study highlights the various nanocarriers and compounds that can be used for selective tumor targeting and the inherent difficulties in cancer therapy. Nanotechnology provides a promising platform for improving cancer detection and treatment in the future, but further research is needed to overcome the current limitations in clinical translation. Progressing nanotechnology to improve targeted cancer treatment: overcoming hurdles in its clinical implementation

Nanobiotechnology research has recently provided numerous basic and applied advances in the health sector. Nanocarriers have been developed for efficient drug delivery and diagnostic tools. Nanocarrier enables an effective, targeted biomolecular interaction in order to lower side effects caused during the treatment. Here, we review the problems associated with the conventional drug development and its delivery system. The efficacy of the treatment can be improved by the usage of efficient nanocarriers such as polymeric nanocarriers, superparamagnetic nanoparticles, quantum dot, dendrimers and lipid nanoparticles. We discuss the mechanisms of delivery. This review may aid in providing better solutions for unsolved problems that prevails with the day-to-day in silico, in vitro and in vivo drug delivery model development.

Nanocarriers for drug delivery applications

The host immune system is highly compromised in case of viral infections and relapses are very common. The capacity of the virus to destroy the host cell by liberating its own DNA or RNA and replicating inside the host cell poses challenges in the development of antiviral therapeutics. In recent years, many new technologies have been explored for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of viral infections. Nanotechnology has emerged as one of the most promising technologies on account of its ability to deal with viral diseases in an effective manner, addressing the limitations of traditional antiviral medicines. It has not only helped us to overcome problems related to solubility and toxicity of drugs, but also imparted unique properties to drugs, which in turn has increased their potency and selectivity toward viral cells against the host cells. The initial part of the paper focuses on some important proteins of influenza, Ebola, HIV, herpes, Zika, dengue, and corona virus and those of the host cells important for their entry and replication into the host cells. This is followed by different types of nanomaterials which have served as delivery vehicles for the antiviral drugs. It includes various lipid-based, polymer-based, lipid-polymer hybrid-based, carbon-based, inorganic metal-based, surface-modified, and stimuli-sensitive nanomaterials and their application in antiviral therapeutics. The authors also highlight newer promising treatment approaches like nanotraps, nanorobots, nanobubbles, nanofibers, nanodiamonds, nanovaccines, and mathematical modeling for the future. Cancer becomes the leading cause of deaths worldwide, including breast cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer that preferentially metastasize to bone and bone marrow. Bisphosphonates (BPs) have been used successfully for many years to reduce the skeletal complications related with the benign and malignant bone diseases that are characterized by enhanced osteoclastic bone resorption. Nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates (N-BPs) have also been demonstrated to exhibit direct anti-tumour effects. BPs binds avidly to the bone matrix, and released from matrix during bone resorption process, BPs are internalized by the osteoclasts where they interfere with biochemical pathways and induce osteoclast apoptosis. BPs also antagonizes the production of osteoclast and promotes the osteoblasts proliferation. Currently, Zoledronic acid is widely used as one of the BP having high bone specificity and potential to inhibit the osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. In addition to inhibition of cell multiplication and initiation of apoptosis in cultured cancer cells, they also interfere with adhesion of cancer cells to the bone matrix and inhibit cell migration and invasion. Pathophysiology and current target therapies like conjugate of BPs with liposomes, nanoparticle used for the treatment of bone cancer is reviewed in this article along with the use of different BPs.

Ulcerative colitis is identified by mucus diarrhea, tenesmus, bowel distension, and anemia. 5-aminosalicylic acid drugs, steroids, and immunosuppressant are used for therapy of ulcerative colitis. The annual occurrence of disease in Asia, America, and Europe was estimated to be 6.3, 19.2 and 24.3 per 100,000 people-years. The main challenges in the management of the diseaseare drug-related side-effects and local targeting. To overcome these challenges probiotics and micro and Nano particulate system auspicious approaches to overcome drug-related adverse side effect and local targeting. Upon ingestion, the probiotics can result in health beneficial effects. Probiotics are mainly used as gut modulators but are also now days explored for their use in ulcerative colitis. Micro and Nano particulate drug delivery system have been achieving huge importance for targeting of the drug to colon locally at a controlled and sustained rate. The main objective of this article is to explore probiotics and micro and nano particulate approaches for the suitable targeting and overcome the drug-associated side effect.

Importance of Nanocarriers and Probiotics in the Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis

Among the various types of Diseases, Cancer is considered as one of the deadly diseases in the world. Lung, Prostate, and Breast Cancer are some of the Cancer types that are contributing most to the Mortality Rate. In order to overcome, our proposed research work includes Data Collection which is further analyzed and modelled using Machine Learning Techniques. Moreover, the Machine Learning models were evaluated as well as compared based on Performance Metrics parameters like Accuracy, Precision, Recall, F1Score. The best fit Algorithm obtained with the highest Accuracy is Simple Linear Regression for the prediction of Lung Cancer, Logistic Regression for the prediction of Prostate Cancer and Breast Cancer. This has been integrated with python script through the Python Flask Framework. This allows us to fetch the user inputs/responses by the help of Forms and according to the values entered by the users, the interface will predict whether the person is suffering from Benign (Noncancerous) or Malignant (Cancerous). Hence, this study would help in the early detection of Cancer in humans which would give a warning and make them alert regarding the treatment of diagnosed Cancer. It will also help in reducing the Mortality Rate of Cancer patients along with the saving of their funds.

Cancer Detection and Analysis Using Machine Learning

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought many changes in the healthcare industry lately. As things are going normal with time, many health projects designed and used during emergencies are left unexploited. To make the perpetual use of those technologies, the current need should be taken into consideration along with necessary ideas and frameworks to evolve the existing system into. To demonstrate the same, in this paper, we have presented a package of healthcare services powered by Artificial Intelligence via a chatbot system, where a user can entertain the services either by an interactive Graphical User Interface or a conversational chatbot system. This proposed system showcases how a similar Covid-19 system can be developed into a sophisticated healthcare service. This paper emphasises adding Artificial Intelligence to any conventional software via chatbot services which would broaden the services it provides even further. In order to find out the probable best technology to integrate AI with, about 50 papers have been analysed and out of which 27 relevant papers have been included in the literature review. In future, we intend to add medical support and other intelligence-based services to our system in order to meet user requirements and essential features in the field of healthcare.
