Risk and uncertainty are inherent characteristics of agricultural production system; farmers are confronted with various potential risks related to production, markets, and prices that affect their financial returns and overall welfare. A study was undertaken to analyze factors affecting adoption of crop diversification as a risk management strategy in vegetable cultivation. A logistic regression model was constructed and tested based on responses to a questionnaire from 556 vegetable growers from eight districts of Uttar Pradesh. About 80% of vegetable growers adopted crop diversification and comparatively younger, socially underserved farmers with lower income are more likely to adopt diversification as a risk mitigating tool. Use of high-yielding seed, volatility in temperature, high marketed surplus ratio, availability of market demand, arrangement of organized buyers, and adoption of processing techniques are most likely to influence adoption of diversification. sharing behaviour of vegetable growers and to determine the relationship of socio-personal characteristics of vegetable growers with their information seeking and information sharing behaviour. The data were collected by selecting 80 vegetable growers randomly. Findings of the study revealed that about one third of the respondents (33.75%) and nearly one fourth of the respondents (23.75%) had medium and high overall information seeking behaviour, respectively. Private dealers, friends, Kisan Mela and PAU scientists were emerged as the main sources of seeking information. The weed control, plant protection, recommended varieties and fertilizer applications were the major areas for seeking information regarding vegetable cultivation. Most of the respondents shared information with neighbours, friends, relatives and mode of sharing was verbal as stated by 100 per cent of the respondents. Nearly one third of the respondents possessed medium and high overall information sharing behaviour. The plant protection, weed control, marketing, seed treatment and recommended varieties were the main aspects to share the information. Education, operational land holding, land under vegetable cultivation, income, social participation, scientific orientation and mass media exposure were positively and significantly correlated with information seeking behaviour. Age, social participation and cosmopoliteness were positively and significantly correlated with information sharing behaviour. Thus it is suggested that farmers should seek information from reliable sources. They should be motivated to share the information among the other farmers who are engaged in vegetable cultivation.

Information seeking and information sharing behaviour of the vegetable growers of Ludhiana district.

The present study was carried out to examine the changes in cropping pattern and the contribution of food grains to central pool over the years by Punjab. The study revealed that the area under wheat and paddy crops, which was 40.50 and 6.90 per cent of gross cropped area (GCA) during 1970–71, has increased to 44.65 and 35.66 per cent during 2011–12, respectively. However, the area under pulses, maize, bajra, oilseeds and sugarcane has declined by 7.18, 3.47, 9.75, 3.61 and 0.69 per cent, respectively. Thus, paddy-wheat crop rotation became predominant at the cost of maize, other cereals, oilseeds and pulses in the state. Food grain production in the state has grown from 20.00 million tonne in 1992–93 to 23.49 million tonne in 2002–03 and further increased to 27.22 million tonne in 2011–12. The share of Punjab state in food grain production has decreased over the years, and came down to 10.57 per cent in 2011–12 from 11.14 per cent in 1992–93. The study revealed that the production in food grains and cropping pattern in Punjab has almost stagnant, and there is a need for diversification of agriculture at this stage. Emphasis must be given on cultivation of water saving crops as well as the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides may be minimized to enhance the sustainable agriculture in Punjab.

Fifty years ago, Punjab embarked on its famous Green Revolution, leading the rest of India in that innovation, and becoming the country's breadbasket. Now its economy and society are struggling by relative, and sometimes even absolute, measures. Using the original Green Revolution as a benchmark, this paper discusses five areas of challenge and promise for a new round of agricultural innovation in Punjab. These are: complexity of the agricultural economy, complementary inputs such as infrastructure, switching costs (including risks), balancing frontier innovation and adaptation, and the relative roles of the public and private sectors.
