Myzus persicae showed a reduced relative growth rate on plants given soil drenches of 1% CCC (a plant growth retardant), and a greater reduction when CCC was applied as a foliar spray. The use of the relative growth rate of aphids as a convenient measure of their performance in relation to plant resistance is discussed.

RESISTENZ VON PFLANZEN GEGENUBER MYZUS PERSICAE, DIE DURCH EINEN REGULATOR DES PFLANZENWACHSTUMS INDUZIERT UND AN DER RELATIVEN WACHSTUMSRATE GEMESSEN WURDE



Die Resistenz von Kohlpflanzen, die mit 1% CCC (einem Regulator des Pflanzenwachstums) behandelt worden waren, gegen Myzus persicae wurde mit Hilfe des Wachstumsquotienten der Blattlause (μg/μg/Tag) gemessen. Diese Methode arbeitet rasch und ergibt eine ziemlich geringe Variabilitat. Der Masstab scheint sinnvoll und ziemlich empfindlich zu sein.



Mit CCC gedungte Pflanzen zeigten stets eine ziemlich starke Verminderung des Wachstumsquotienten von Myzus persicae. Wurde CCC auf die Pflanzen aufgespruht, so ergab sich ein noch geringerer Wachstumsquotient der Blattlause.

It was shown that the fecundity of aphids may be altered on plants treated with plant growth stimulators and retardants. There was evidence that the reduced fecundity and smaller size of Aphis fabae on broad beans treated with ethylene bisnitrourethane was related to the reduced nutritional value of the plants to the aphids, levels of soluble nitrogen being reduced. The reduced fecundity of A. fabae on broad beans treated with gibberellic acid may be related to the apparent toxicity of the compound when fed directly to the aphid. CCC (chlormequat chloride) seemed toxic to both A. fabae and Brevicoryne brassicae, and the number of embryos per adult A. fabae reared on CCC-treated beans was reduced, although this did not reduce fecundity. Apart from any direct action of CCC on the aphids, there is evidence that the substance may reduce the availability of nutrients from the phloem of treated plants to the insects by reducing translocation, and there is further evidence that amino acid content of the sap may be reduced.

Performance of Aphis fabae and Brevicoryne brassicae on plants treated with growth regulators

APHIDS are among those plant-feeding insects which are closely adapted to their hosts. It is, therefore, not surprising that even slight variations in the growth and physiology of host-plants may have quite marked effects on aphids feeding on them. Some such effects of plant growth and senescence, water relations and varietal resistance have been described by Kennedy1. For the same reason, interesting results can be expected from experiments involving plants treated with growth regulators. Robinson2–4 studied a whole series of herbicides and growth regulators, and reported reduced fecundity in some instances. The present paper is a preliminary account of the effects of aphids of ‘Cycocel’ ((2-chloro-ethyl) trimethylammonium chloride), a compound causing a retardation in plant growth and used in the United States for producing pot poinsettias of marketable height and form. The aphid/host-plant combination used was Brevicoryne brassicae (L.) on Wroxton brussels sprout.
