Significant growth of ever bigger container ships number in service worldwide have drawn experts' attention to the need for reliable hydrodynamic response analysis tool of such ships. In the first chapter, political-economic background which had led to such a process is described, and historical development of container ships is presented. After that, a short literature survey on hidroelasticity is given. A huge disproportion is clearly visible – while ship response in vertical plane is investigated quite well, one can rarely stumble upon an article, in relevant language (since knowledge of Chinese language(s) haven’t become common, yet), that deals with coupled horizontal bending and torsion of container ships in waves. Second chapter brings theorethical background for writing (part) of computer program, DYANA, for dry natural modes of coupled horizontal and torsional vibration calculation. Eight-degrees-of-freedom beam finite elements, that account for bending, shear, torsion and cross-section warping, are used for open cross-section hull structure modeling. Simpler, six-degrees-of-freedom elements are chosen for closed cross-section parts with neglected warping. Transitional elements that connect those two types of finite elements in a global model, are given special attention. A version of Bureau Veritas' HYDROSTAR solves hydrodynamic part of the problem. In chapter three, linear potential flow theory, as well as 3D boundary integral equation method, used by the program to solve radiation-diffraction boundary value problem, are presented. Effect of forward speed, that further complicates the problem, is pointed out. Encounter frequency method, used in HYDROSTAR, is shortly described. Coupling of 1D structural and 3D hydrodynamic models, together with modal superposition method on which it is based, are dealt with in chapter four. In fifth chapter, methodology of hydroelastic analysis is given and plans for practical use are presented. Reliability of the developed method is validated by numerical examples in chapter six. Prismatic model dry natural modes are compared to analytical solution of coupled vibration differential equations. Elastic barge response in harmonic waves is checked versus model experiments results taken from literature. At the end, scientific contribution of the conducted investigation is pointed out, and guidelines for future work are given.

A method is presented for prediction of pressure pulses induced by propeller that requires a minimum number of inputs compared to similar theoretical models. The method is based on database of model-scale measurements carried out at MARINTEK since 1980. This database is analyzed with the help of artificial neural networks both for single screw and twin screw vessels for non-cavitating as well as cavitating case. An user-friendly Windows software is developed integrating the method. A short description of artificial neural network is presented. Model scale verification of the method shows good agreement between measured and predicted values.Copyright © 2002 by ASME

Prediction of Pressure Pulses Induced by Propeller

This approach is based on the assumption that the ship hull can be represented as a non uniform section beam. The propeller excitations in terms of pressure pulses and shaft line moments and forces are introduced. To take into account this exciting source in the early design stage a statistical formula for dynamic excitation of propeller was developed. Furthermore the superimposition of local effects has been performed with the use of an analytical formula. The local effect due to the different space topologies such as cabins, public spaces, technical and machinery areas has been taken into account. The transversal beams, longitudinal girders, stiffeners and pillars as supported structural elements are considered in the vibration local response.
