Element-by-element we have combined the optical components in the three 2MASS cameras, and incorporated detector quantum efficiency curves and site-specific atmospheric transmissions, to create three relative spectral response curves (RSRs). We provide absolute 2MASS attributes associated with "zero magnitude" in the JHKs bands so that these RSRs may be used for synthetic photometry. The RSRs tie 2MASS to the Cohen-Walker-Witteborn framework of absolute photometry and spectra for the purpose of using 2MASS data to support the development of absolute calibrators for IRAC and pairwise cross-calibrators between all three SIRTF instruments. We examine the robustness of these RSRs to changes in water vapor within a night. We compare the observed 2MASS magnitudes of 33 stars (converted from the precision optical calibrators of Landolt and Carter-Meadows into absolute infrared calibrators from 1.2-35 um with our predictions, thereby deriving 2MASS "zero point offsets" from the ensemble. These offsets are the final ingredients essential to merge 2MASS $JHK_{s}$ data with other absolutely calibrated bands and stellar spectra, and to support the creation of faint calibration stars for SIRTF.

Measuring Reddening with SDSS Stellar Spectra

We report the discovery of a massive protostar M17 MIR embedded in a hot molecular core in M17. The multi-wavelength data of M17 MIR during 1993 to 2019 show significant mid-IR (MIR) variations, which can be split into three stages, the decreasing phase during 1993.03 to mid 2004, the quiescent phase during mid 2004 to mid 2010, and the re-brightening phase since mid 2010 untill now. The H2O maser emission variation toward M17 MIR, together with the MIR variation, indicate an enhanced disk accretion rate onto M17 MIR during the decreasing and re-brightening phase. According to the kinematics of H2O maser spots, accretion rate ~7x10^-4 Msun/yr is estimated in the initial stage of the re-brightening phase, and a higher rate ~2x10^-3 Msun/yr is obtained in later stage, given by the MIR flux increased by a factor of 3. Radiative transfer modeling of SEDs of M17~MIR in the 2005 (quiescent) and 2017 epoch (accretion outburst) constrains the basic stellar parameters of M17 MIR, which is an intermediate-mass protostar (M~5.4 Msun) with lower accretion rate ~1.1x10^-5 Msun in quiescent and two orders of magnitude higher rate ~1.7x10^-3 Msun/yr in outburst. The enhanced accretion rate during outburst induces the luminosity outburst $\Delta L\approx7600 $Lsun, and a larger stellar radius is required to produce accretion rate consistent with observations. The decreasing and re-brightening phase reflect two accretion bursts ($\Delta t\sim 9-20$ yr) with burst magnitudes of 2 mag, separated by a quiescent phase lasting $\sim6$ yr. The fraction time in accretion ourbusrt is about 83\% over 26 yr. M17 MIR is the youngest one among the six confirmed sources with accretion burst. The extreme youth of M17 MIR suggests that minor accretion bursts are frequent at the earliest stages of massive star formation.

M17 MIR: A Massive Protostar with Multiple Accretion Outbursts *

In recent years, dramatic outbursts have been identified toward massive protostars via infrared and millimeter dust continuum and molecular maser emission. The longest lived outburst ($>6$ yr) persists in NGC6334I-MM1, a deeply-embedded object with no near-IR counterpart. Using FORCAST and HAWC+ on SOFIA, we have obtained the first mid-infrared images of this field since the outburst began. Despite being undetected in pre-outburst ground-based 18 $\mu$m images, MM1 is now the brightest region at all three wavelengths (25, 37, and 53 $\mu$m), exceeding the ultracompact HII region MM3 (NGC6334F). Combining the SOFIA data with ALMA imaging at four wavelengths, we construct a spectral energy distribution of the combination of MM1 and the nearby hot core MM2. The best-fit Robitaille radiative transfer model yields a luminosity of $(4.9\pm0.8)\times10^4 L_\odot$. Accounting for an estimated pre-outburst luminosity ratio MM1:MM2 = $2.1\pm0.4$, the luminosity of MM1 has increased by a factor of $16.3\pm4.4$. The pre-outburst luminosity implies a protostar of mass 6.7 $M_\odot$, which can produce the ionizing photon rate required to power the pre-outburst hypercompact HII region surrounding the likely outbursting protostar MM1B. The total energy and duration of the outburst exceed the S255IR-NIRS3 outburst by a factor of $\gtrsim3$, suggesting a different scale of event involving expansion of the protostellar photosphere (to $\gtrsim$ 20 $R_\odot$), thereby supporting a higher accretion rate ($\gtrsim$0.0023 $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) and reducing the ionizing photon rate. In the grid of hydrodynamic models of Meyer et al. 2021, the combination of outburst luminosity and magnitude (3) places the NGC6334I-MM1 event in the region of moderate total accretion ($\sim$0.1-0.3 $M_\odot$) and hence long duration ($\sim$40-130 yr).

The Extraordinary Outburst in the Massive Protostellar System NGC6334I-MM1: Strong Increase in Mid-Infrared Continuum Emission

Observed changes in protostellar brightness can be complicated to interpret. In our James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) Transient Monitoring Survey, we discovered that a young binary protostar, HOPS 373, is undergoing a modest 30% brightness increase at 850 μm, caused by a factor of 1.8–3.3 enhancement in the accretion rate. The initial burst occurred over a few months, with a sharp rise and then a shallower decay. A second rise occurred soon after the decay, and the source is still bright one year later. The mid-IR emission, the small-scale CO outflow mapped with ALMA, and the location of variable maser emission indicate that the variability is associated with the SW component. The near-IR and NEOWISE W1 and W2 emission is located along the blueshifted CO outflow, spatially offset by ∼3 to 4″ from the SW component. The K-band emission imaged by UKIRT shows a compact H2 emission source at the edge of the outflow, with a tail tracing the outflow back to the source. The W1 emission, likely dominated by scattered light, brightens by 0.7 mag, consistent with expectations based on the submillimeter light curve. The signal of continuum variability in K band and W2 is masked by stable H2 emission, as seen in our Gemini/GNIRS spectrum, and perhaps by CO emission. These differences in emission sources complicate IR searches for variability of the youngest protostars.

Dissecting the Different Components of the Modest Accretion Bursts of the Very Young Protostar HOPS 373

Context. Class II methanol masers are signposts of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs). Recent evidence shows that flares of these masers are driven by MYSO accretion bursts. Thus, maser monitoring can be used to identify such bursts which are hard to discover otherwise. Infrared observations reveal burst-induced changes in the spectral energy distribution (first and foremost a luminosity increase), which provide valuable information on a very intense phase of high-mass star formation.Aims. In mid-January 2019, flaring of the 6.7 GHz CH3 OH maser (hereafter maser) of the MYSO G358.93-0.03 (hereafter G358) was reported. The international maser community initiated an extensive observational campaign which revealed extraordinary maser activity and yielded the detection of numerous new masering transitions. Interferometric imaging with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and the Submillimeter Array resolved the maser emitting core of the star forming region and proved the association of the masers with the brightest continuum source (MM1), which hosts a hot molecular core. These observations, however, failed to detect a significant rise in the (sub)millimeter dust continuum emission. Therefore, we performed near-infrared (NIR) and far-infrared (FIR) observations to prove or disprove whether the CH3 OH flare was driven by an accretion burst.Methods. NIR imaging with the Gamma-Ray Burst Optical/Near-infrared Detector has been acquired and integral-field spectroscopy with the Field-Imaging Far-Infrared Line Spectrometer (FIFI-LS) aboard the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) was carried out on two occasions to detect possible counterparts to the (sub)millimeter sources and compare their photometry to archival measurements. The comparison of pre-burst and burst spectral energy distributions is of crucial importance to judge whether a substantial luminosity increase, caused by an accretion burst, is present and if it triggered the maser flare. Radiative transfer modeling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the dust continuum emission at multiple epochs provides valuable information on the bursting MYSO.Results. The FIR fluxes of MM1 measured with FIFI-LS exceed those from Herschel significantly, which clearly confirms the presence of an accretion burst. The second epoch data, taken about 16 months later, still show increased fluxes. Our radiative transfer modeling yielded major burst parameters and suggests that the MYSO features a circumstellar disk which might be transient. From the pre-burst, burst, and post-burst SEDs, conclusions on heating and cooling time-scales could be drawn. Circumstances of the burst-induced maser relocation have been explored.Conclusions. The verification of the accretion burst from G358 is another confirmation that Class II methanol maser flares represent an alert for such events. Thus, monitoring of these masers greatly enhances the chances of identifying MYSOs during periods of intense growth. The few events known to date already indicate that there is a broad range in burst strength and duration as well as environmental characteristics. The G358 event is the shortest and least luminous accretion burst known to date. According to models, bursts of this kind occur most often.
