A sixth order nonlinear model for horizontal head rotations in humans is presented and investigated using experimental results on head movement trajectories and neck muscle EMG. The controller signals, structured in accordance with time optimal control theory, are parameterized, and controller signal parameter variations show a dominating influence on different aspects of the head movement trajectory. The model fits the common head acceleration types over a wide range of amplitudes, and also less common (dynamic overshoot) trajectories.

A sixth order nonlinear model for horizontal head rotations in humans is analyzed using an extended parameter sensitivity analysis and a global optimization algorithm. The sensitivity analysis is used in both the direct sense, as a model fitting tool, and in the indirect sense, as a guide to experimental design. Resolution is defined in terms of the sensitivity table, and is used to interpret the sensitivity results. Using sensitivity analyses, the head and eye movement systems are compared and contrasted. Controller signal parameters are the most influential. Their variations and effects on head movement trajectories and accelerations are investigated, and the conclusions are compared with clinical neurological findings. The global optimization algorithm, in addition to automating the fitting of various types of data, is combined with time optimality theory to give theoretical time-optimal inputs to the model.

Sensitivity analysis and optimization for a head movement model

When we are confronted with a living system, whose design is mysterious and whose optimizations are obscure, it is no easy task--as Professor Stein reminds us--to arrive at an answer to the question he has posed in this paper. Stein's target article is an important contribution for two main reasons. The first, which we shall mention only in passing, is that it is likely to provide much debate on what the controlled variables might be; moreover, it will force those who find this a burning issue to put their cards on the table. The second, and we feel more important reason, is that the paper poses a question--\"What muscle variable(s) does the nervous system control. .. ?\"--whose very nature raises questions about the strategies neuroscience uses to investigate problems of control and coordination of movement. In our commentary we will focus on some of the (not so) implicit assumptions behind the question posed by Stein; if nothing else we hope to heighten sensi tivity to some of the issues involved and (perhaps) to force the neuroscientist to consider his/her epistemology.

The parameter values for this model are specific to the human eye movement systems; however, the form of the model is applicable to other neurological motor control systems. The muscle length-tension diagram was modeled with an ideal spring. The muscle force-velocity relationship was linearized in a manner that produced a linear model. Initial parameter estimates were based on physiological data, human when possible. Then a function minimization program was used to fine tune model parameters. These parameter values were compared to the original physiological data to ensure that they were within the range of variability of the data. The antagonist dashpot value was selected to minimize the mean squared error between human and model responses; the value produced suggested a unique simplified representation for the original physiological data. The parameter estimation routine was applied to make the model match atypical human eye movements; these simulations suggested that glissades in normals are caused by pulsewidth, not pulse height errors.
