Old and new results in statistical nuclear spectroscopy

Global and local properties of interacting bosons are discussed and compared with the corresponding properties of fermions. Regarding the global properties, the main conclusion of this paper is that the shape of the level density is dominated by the number of single-boson levels, while the number of bosons plays a minor role. As to the local properties, the fluctuations of a two-body random boson ensemble, even in the dense limit, are consistent with the GOE predictions.

The two-body random ensemble for a many-body bosonic theory is mapped to a problem of random polynomials on the unit interval. In this way one can understand the predominance of 0{sup +} ground states, and analytic expressions can be derived for distributions of lowest eigenvalues, energy gaps, density of states, and so forth. Recently studied nuclear spectroscopic properties are addressed.

Two-body random ensembles: from nuclear spectra to random polynomials

The thermal diffusivity of a low conducting solid is measured by means of a capacitive method, providing the thermal expansion of the specimen as a function of time. The simultaneous knowledge of the temperature profile vs. time at the thermal source, in contact with the sample base, allows a rapid, accurate and reliable determination (within ~ 2%) of thermal diffusivity. No sensor is inserted into the specimen, thus avoiding any perturbation of the temperature field.

The spectral-distribution method is extended to a system of monopole (L=0) and quadrupole (L=2) bosons. For noninteractingL=0 bosons, analytical expressions for the first four-moments are given. The main conclusion of this paper is that, in the case of bosons, the presence of many single-particle levels seems to be essential in generating a normal-level density, the number of particles playing a minor role.
