A novel wearable dual-band textile antenna, designed for optimal on-body performance in the 2.4 and 5.8 GHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical bands, is proposed. By using brass eye-lets and a combination of conducting and non-conductive textile materials, a half-mode substrate integrated waveguide cavity with ground plane is realized that is very compact and flexible, while still directing radiation away from the wearer. Additional miniaturization is achieved by adding a row of shorting vias and slots. Beside excellent free space performance in the 2.4 and 5.8 GHz bands, respectively, with measured impedance bandwidth of 4.9% and 5.1%, maximal measured free-space gain of 4.1 and 5.8 dBi, and efficiency of 72.8% and 85.6%, very stable on-body performance is obtained, with minimal frequency detuning when deploying the antenna on the human body and when bent around cylinders with radii of 75 and 40 mm. At 2.45 and 5.8 GHz, respectively, the measured on-body gain is 4.4 and 5.7 dBi, with sufficiently small calculated SAR values of 0.55 and 0.90 W/kg. These properties make the proposed antenna excellently suited for wearable on-body systems.

This article focuses on the fabrication and characterization of stretchable interconnects for wearable electronics applications. Interconnects were screen-printed with a stretchable silver-polymer composite ink on 50-μm thick thermoplastic polyurethane. The initial sheet resistances of the manufactured interconnects were an average of 36.2 mΩ/◽, and half the manufactured samples withstood single strains of up to 74%. The strain proportionality of resistance is discussed, and a regression model is introduced. Cycling strain increased resistance. However, the resistances here were almost fully reversible, and this recovery was time-dependent. Normalized resistances to 10%, 15%, and 20% cyclic strains stabilized at 1.3, 1.4, and 1.7. We also tested the validity of our model for radio-frequency applications through characterization of a stretchable radio-frequency identification tag.

A wearable antenna integrated into a military beret for an indoor/outdoor positioning system is proposed. The antenna consists of a truncated patch and a circular ring patch with four conductive threads. The truncated patch antenna is designed for the Global Positioning System (GPS) L1 band for use in outdoor situations, and the circular ring patch antenna with four conductive threads operates at the TM41 higher-order resonance mode (915 MHz) with a monopole-like radiation characteristic for indoor positioning systems. The antenna is fabricated using textile materials and is integrated into a military beret. The effects of the antenna deformation due to the shape of the military beret and the effects of the human head are analyzed via both simulation and measurement. The simulated and measured 10-dB return-loss bandwidths of the antenna on the head phantom fully cover the 915-MHz industrial, science, and medical band and the 1.575-GHz GPS L1 band.

Wearable Antenna Integrated into Military Berets for Indoor/Outdoor Positioning System

A comprehensive review concerning the geometry, the manufacturing technologies, the materials, and the numerical techniques, adopted for the analysis and design of wideband and ultrawideband (UWB) antennas for wireless applications, is presented. Planar, printed, dielectric, and wearable antennas, achievable on laminate (rigid and flexible), and textile dielectric substrates are taken into account. The performances of small, low-profile, and dielectric resonator antennas are illustrated paying particular attention to the application areas concerning portable devices (mobile phones, tablets, glasses, laptops, wearable computers, etc.) and radio base stations. This information provides a guidance to the selection of the different antenna geometries in terms of bandwidth, gain, field polarization, time-domain response, dimensions, and materials useful for their realization and integration in modern communication systems.

Wideband and UWB Antennas for Wireless Applications: A Comprehensive Review

The Cospas (Cosmicheskaya Sistyema Poiska Avariynich Sudov)-Sarsat Search-and-Rescue (SAR) satellite system provides distress alert and location data to assist rescue operations at sea, in the air, or on land. This paper summarizes the design, development, and verification for a body-worn antenna system interfaced with commercial Cospas-Sarsat personal locator beacons (PLBs), where the implemented system is integrated within an inflatable live vest. The modular approach adopted in the work allows different antenna configurations for different platforms. The electrical and mechanical requirements for antenna materials and antennas were derived from the Cospas-Sarsat system requirements, possible antenna platforms, and the maritime operational environments. The antennas were used in field tests organized in cooperation with the local Cospas-Sarsat search-and-rescue authorities. The field tests were a success. In both cases, low-earth orbit search-and-rescue (LEOSAR) satellites detected the distress signal within minutes, and accurately resolved the location. An additional detection by Geostationary Orbit Search and Rescue (GEOSAR) satellite confirmed the successful operation of the body-worn antenna system.
