Graphene oxide (GO) plays an important role in improving the mechanical properties and flame resistance of materials. In this work, polyimide (PI) composite foams were in situ generated by introducing modified GO based on a novel method. GO was modified by the interaction of its surfactant groups with dopamine (Do) using noncovalent bonds, to facilitate its dispersion in the PI matrix. The π–π conjugation was confirmed between GO and Do. Chemical interactions occurred between GO and PI through the reaction between the active groups on GO and –NCO of isocyanates. The resulting PI composite foams were characterized for their morphological, structural, mechanical, thermal and flame retardant properties. The cell structure of PI composite foams was uniform. Meanwhile, the compressive strength of composite foams significantly increased from 130 kPa to 163 kPa, resulting in a distinct enhancement in mechanical properties. The thermal stability of the composite foams was highly enhanced by GO as evidenced by the decreased mass loss during the maximum decomposition stage and increased residue at 800 °C. Furthermore, the values of limited oxygen index (LOI) of PI foams increased from 42.0% to 44.5%, while the PI composite foams exhibited self-extinguishing property. Therefore the modified GO dramatically improved the mechanical, thermal and flame resistance properties of PI foams.

Low density composites of sodium montmorillonite and poly(amide-imide) polymers have been created using an ice templating method, which serves as an alternative to the often-difficult foaming of high temperature/high performance polymers The starting polymer was received in the poly(amic acid) form which can be cured using heat, into a water insoluble amide-imide copolymer The resulting materials have densities in the 005 g/cm3 range and have excellent mechanical properties Using a tertiary amine as a processing aid provides for lower viscosity and allows more concentrated polymer solutions to be used The concentration of the amine relative to the acid groups on the polymer backbone has been found to cause significant difference in the mechanical properties of the dried materials The synthesis and characterization of low density versions of two poly(amide-imide) polymers and their composites with sodium montmorillonite clay are discussed in the present work

   Self-supporting films and thick-walled moldings (blades) were obtained from solutions and melts of multiblock (segmental) copoly(urethane-imides). The initial copoly(urethane-imides) were obtained on the basis of aliphatic polyesters: poly(propyleneglycol), poly(diethyleneglycoladipinate) and polycaprolactone, dianhydride of 1,3-bis(3’,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) benzene and aromatic diamines: 4,4’-bis-(4”-aminophenoxy)biphenyl and 1,4-bis(4’-aminophenoxy)diphenylsulfone. Samples of films and moldings were studied by IR spectroscopy, TGA, DSC and mechanical analysis under static and dynamic (DMA) experimental conditions. It is assumed that the diff erences in the properties of films and moldings are due to an increase in the proportion of aromatic blocks due to microdestruction of polymer chains and increased interfacial interactions of polyester and urethanimide microphases (blocks) in polymer systems during the processing of polymers from the melt by injection molding.
