The following case report describes the diagnosis and surgery of bilateral polydactyly of unknown origin in a colt. A 7-month-old Berber colt was referred for cosmetic and curative excision of supernumerary digits. Radiographic examination revealed bilateral polydactyly and welldeveloped first carpal bones. Surgery consisted of an osteotomy of both second metacarpal bones combined with an amputation of the supernumerary digits. The follow-up at 18 months after surgery revealed a sound horse with an excellent cosmetic outcome.

This case report describes the diagnosis and surgical treatment of unilateral polydactylism of unknown origin in a calf. A six-week-old female German Holstein-Friesian calf was referred to the clinic with a hyperflexion of the fetlock and carpal joints of the right forelimb, associated with two surplus digits in the same leg, which was confirmed by radiographic examination. Surgery consisted of an osteotomy of the second metacarpal bone, a disarticulation in the antebrachiocarpal joint of the additional limb combined with an amputation of both odd digits. The follow-up of 12 months revealed a functionally sound heifer showing a good cosmetic outcome.

Unilateral polydactylism in a German Holstein-Friesian calf - a case report.

The present study aimed to detect the commonly and rarely occurred congenital limb deformities affecting foals, calves and goat as well as their surgical management. Twenty three animals (14 calves, 2 buffalo calves, 6 foals and a goat) suffering from one or more congenital limb deformities were examined. The history, clinical examination as well as radiological evaluation and surgical interference of some affections were described. The results revealed eight congenital musculoskeletal disorders affecting both fore and hind limbs. Uncommon anomalies such as polydactyly, notomelia with polydactyly, adactyly, abrachia, tibial hemimelia, acroteriasis congenita were recorded. Satisfactory recovery was obtained after surgical intervention of cases of polydactyly, notomelia, digital hyperextension and flexural limb deformities.

A two-year-old, 290 kg, intact female camel was admitted for surgical removal of bilateral supernumerary digits associated with the medial aspects of the metacarpi and proximal to the fetlock joints. Radiographic examination revealed bilateral polydactyly with complete fusion of metacarpal bones. Surgery consisted of an osteotomy of surplus metacarpal bones combined with amputation of the supernumerary digits. The follow-up at 12 months after surgery revealed a sound camel with an excellent cosmetic outcome.
