For the past three decades, computer-aided process planning (CAPP) has attracted a large amount of research interest. A huge volume of literature has been published on this subject. Today, CAPP research faces new challenges owing to the dynamic markets and business globalisation. Thus, there is an urgent need to ascertain the current status and identify future trends of CAPP. Covering articles published on the subjects of CAPP in the past 10 years or so, this article aims to provide an up-to-date review of the CAPP research works, a critical analysis of journals that publish CAPP research works, and an understanding of the future direction in the field. First, general information is provided on CAPP. The past reviews are summarised. Discussions about the recent CAPP research are presented in a number of categories, i.e. feature-based technologies, knowledge-based systems, artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms, fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic, Petri nets, agent-based technology, Internet-based technology, STEP-compliant CAPP and other emerging technologies. Research on some specific aspects of CAPP is also provided. Discussions and analysis of the methods are then presented based on the data gathered from the Elsevier's Scopus abstract and citation database. The concepts of 'Subject Strength' of a journal and 'technology impact factor' are introduced and used for discussions based on the publication data. The former is used to gauge the level of focus of a journal on a particular research subject/domain, whereas the latter is used to assess the level of impact of a particular technology, in terms of citation counts. Finally, a discussion on the future development is presented.

Computer-aided process planning-A critical review of recent developments and future trends

Automated machining feature recognition, a sub-discipline of solid modeling, has been an active research area for last three decades and is a critical component in digital manufacturing thread for detecting manufacturing information from computer aided design (CAD) models. In this paper, a novel framework using Deep 3D Convolutional Neural Networks (3D-CNNs) termed FeatureNet to learn machining features from CAD models of mechanical parts is presented. FeatureNet learns the distribution of complex manufacturing feature shapes across a large 3D model dataset and discovers distinguishing features that help in recognition process automatically. To train FeatureNet, a large-scale mechanical part datasets of 3D CAD models with labeled machining features is automatically constructed. The proposed framework can recognize manufacturing features from the low-level geometric data such as voxels with a very high accuracy. The developed framework can also recognize planar intersecting features in the 3D CAD models. Extensive numerical experiments show that FeatureNet enables significant improvements over the state-of-the-arts manufacturing feature detection techniques. The developed data-driven framework can easily be extended to identify a large variety of machining features leading to a sound foundation for real-time computer aided process planning (CAPP) systems.

In a continuing quest to decrease the time interval between conceptualisation of a product and its first production, the use of information technology in design, analysis and manufacturing practice has been actively researched. The design engineer designs a part and sends the final design to the manufacturing engineer, who re-interprets the design and plans the manufacturing activities to produce the part. These two sections generally work in isolation from each other, resulting in high lead-time, duplication of data, inconsistent product data and sometimes redesign of a product. Feature recognition is a process of reinterpreting a design model database for automating downstream manufacturing activities. Active research in this field has developed numerous techniques such as syntactic pattern recognition, graph theory, volume decomposition, artificial intelligence and hint-based, and neural network-based systems. This paper presents a critical review of strengths and weaknesses of these approaches.

A review of machining feature recognition methodologies

Reverse Engineering (RE) is a long-term goal of engineering and computer science; it aims at the reconstruction of CAD models from measured data by means of 3D mathematical surfaces and geometrical features representing the geometry of a physical part. In the last two decades, reviews and surveys have occasionally covered this topic, but a systematic dissertation of modeling methods from a mechanical engineering point of view is still missing. The purpose of this paper is to fill this gap; starting from a general description of the overall RE framework (acquisition, segmentation, classification, fitting), both an up-to-date survey and a categorization of available modeling techniques and tools working on 3D data are provided. Reverse engineering modeling methods and tools: a survey

This paper reports the design and implementation of a system for automatic recognition of features from freeform surface CAD models of sheet metal parts represented in STL format. The developed methodology has three major steps viz. STL model preprocessing, Region segmentation and automated Feature recognition. The input CAD model is preprocessed to get a healed and topology enriched STL model. A new hybrid region segmentation algorithm based on both edge- and region-based approaches has been developed to segment the preprocessed STL model into meaningful regions. Geometrical properties of facets, edges and vertices such as gauss and mean curvature at vertices, orientations of facet normals, shape structure of triangles, dihedral edge angle (angle between facets), etc. have been computed to identify and classify the regions. Feature on a freeform surface is defined as a set of connected meaningful regions having a particular geometry and topology which has some significance in design and manufacturing. Feature recognition rules have been formulated for recognizing a variety of protrusion and depression features such as holes, bends, darts, beads, louvres, dimples, dents, ridges/channels (blind and through) etc. occurring on automotive sheet metal panels. The developed system has been extensively tested with various industrial sheet metal parts and is found to be robust and consistent. The features data can be post processed and linked to various downstream CAD/CAM applications like automated process planning, sheet metal tool design, refinement of FEM meshes and product redesign.

Automatic recognition of features from freeform surface CAD models

We report on the development of an intelligent system for recognizing prismatic part machining features from CAD models using an artificial neural network. A unique 12-node vector scheme has been proposed to represent machining feature families having variations in topology and geometry. The B-Rep CAD model in ACIS format is preprocessed to generate the feature representation vectors, which are then fed to the neural network for classification. The ANN-based feature-recognition (FR) system was trained with a large set of feature patterns and optimized for its performance. The system was able to efficiently recognize a wide range of complex machining features allowing variations in feature topology and geometry. The data of the recognized features was post-processed and linked to a feature-based CAPP system for CNC machining. The FR system provided seamless integration from CAD model to CNC programming.
