The thesis presents phase stability studies for the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) and focuses in particular on CLIC Drive Beam longitudinal phase stabilisation. This topic constitutes one of the main feasibility challenges for CLIC construction and is an essential component of the current CLIC stabilisation campaign. The studies are divided into two large interrelated sections: the simulation studies for the CLIC Drive Beam stability, and measurements, data analysis and simulations of the CLIC Test Facility (CTF3) Drive Beam phase errors. A dedicated software tool has been developed for a step-by-step analysis of the error propagation through the CLIC Drive Beam. It uses realistic RF potential and beam loading amplitude functions for the Drive and Main Beam accelerating structures, complete models of the recombination scheme and compressor chicane as well as of further CLIC Drive Beam modules. The tool has been tested extensively and its functionality has been verified. The phase error propagation at CLIC has been analysed and the critical phase error frequencies have been identified. The impact of planned error filtering and stabilisation systems for the Drive Beam bunch charge and longitudinal phase has been simulated and the optimal specifications for these systems, such as bandwidth and latency time, have been calculated and discussed. It has been found that a realistic feed-forward system could sufficiently reduce the longitudinal phase error of the Drive Beam, hence verifying that a satisfactory CLIC luminosity recovery system is possible to develop. Alternative designs of the Drive Beam accelerator, the recombination scheme and the phase signal distribution system have also been analysed. Measurements of the CTF3 Drive Beam phase have been performed. The source of the phase and energy errors at CTF3 has been determined. The performance of the phase feed-forward system prototype for CTF3 has been simulated. The prototype's specifications have been defined so that it will provide a sufficient test of the feed-forward correction principle. The prototype based on the defined specifications is currently in development and is to be installed at CTF3 in the second half of 2013.

CLIC drive beam phase stabilisation

The development of the current muon reconstruction in the PANDORAPFANEW particle flow algorithm is presented. First, an introduction to PANDORAPFANEW and a comparision of the signals from muons and pions in the calorimeter is presented. Then, the muon reconstruction algorithm is introduced. Finally, the performance is tested on both isolated muons and muons in high multiplicity events, and found to be adequate. Background signals from beam halo muons are also discussed and possibilities of reconstructing them are suggested.

The unique CLIC Test Facility (CTF3) has been built more than a decade ago to demonstrate the feasibility of the CLIC two beam acceleration scheme. The emphasis was on the high current drive beam generation using a fully loaded highly efficient linac and a complex combination scheme to increase beam current and bunch repetition frequency. This drive beam has been used for deceleration experiments and two beam acceleration. A wealth of relevant results for accelerator physics even beyond CLIC has been obtained and will be presented. The RF to beam efficiency of the linac exceeds 95%, after combination the 28 A drive beam with 12 GHz bunch repetition rate has been used to extract more than 50% of its energy producing 1.3 GW of 12 GHz power as well as performing two beam acceleration at 12 GHz with gradients up to 150 MV/m.

Final Results From the Clic Test Facility (CTF3)

Modern particle accelerators have tight tolerances on the acceptable deviation from their desired machine parameters. The control of the parameters is of crucial importance for safe machine operation and performance. This thesis
focuses on beam-based methods and algorithms to identify and correct errors in particle accelerators. The optics measurements and corrections of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which resulted in an unprecedented low β-beat for
a hadron collider is described. The transverse coupling is another parameter which is of importance to control. Improvement in the reconstruction of the coupling from turn-by-turn data has resulted in a significant decrease of the measurement uncertainty. An automatic coupling correction method, which is based on the injected beam oscillations, has been successfully used in normal operation of the LHC. Furthermore, a new method to measure and correct chromatic coupling that was applied to the LHC, is described. It resulted in a decrease of the chromatic coupling by a factor ∼2 for both beams. The good control of the optics is a significant part of the success of the LHC and hence contributed to the discovery of the Higgs particle. 

Following the discovery of the Higgs particle there is a demand for precise measurements of its properties in a lepton collider. Compact Linear Collider
(CLIC), an electron-positron collider aiming at collision energies up to 3 TeV, is one of the leading candidates. The acceleration in CLIC relies on a two-beam acceleration scheme where one of the beams, referred to as the Drive
Beam, is decelerated while transferring its energy to the Main Beam. This scheme puts tight constraints on the parameters of the Drive Beam in terms of beam current, phase and bunch length. In CLIC Test Facility 3 (CTF3) the
mechanisms behind the observed drifts of these parameters have been studied in detail. The findings have shown that these drifts are mainly linked to variations in the amplitude of the Radio Frequency (RF). A feedback to mitigate the RF-amplitude fluctuations has been implemented and is described in detail. In conjunction with a dedicated energy feedback it reduces the energy variation by a factor ∼3. Together with precise machine tuning this has resulted in a beam current stability very close to the CLIC requirement. The beam phase stability is improved through a feedback operating on the two first klystrons in the CTF3 injector. Two-beam acceleration at the nominal CLIC gradient of 100 MV/m and above has been demonstrated in CTF3. These results, and other recent achievements in CTF3, are presented in this thesis.

Beam-Based Error Identification and Correction Methods for Particle Accelerators

In the Compact LInear Collider (CLIC) the synchronization of the Drive Beam and the Main Beam has to be assured in the femtosecond range to avoid luminosity reduction of the collider. The Drive and Main Beams arrival time is measured with longitudinal monitors and the correction is applied changing the path length of one beam with respect to the other in a magnetic chicane by means of two transverse fast stripline kicker. The performance of the feed forward system will be tested in the CLIC Test Facility (CTF3) measuring the phase at the linac exit, correcting in the chicane after the combination rings and comparing the longitudinal position change before the power RF production system. The developed phase monitors and kicker magnets for the test in CTF3 are described.

In CLIC very tight tolerances exist for the phase and amplitude stability of the main and drive beam. In this paper we present the status of the CLIC beam phase and amplitude stabilisation concept. We specify the resulting tolerances for the beam and technical equipment and compare to measurements.
