Purpose Despite all the recent achievements in the field of interactive marketing and artificial intelligence (AI), it is important to consider the ethical implications of these technologies. This paper explains the concept of corporate digital responsibility (CDR) and how it is affected by new advances in AI. Design/methodology/approach The authors build on the work of Wirtz et al. , (2023) and derive several managerial implications for the challenges that AI poses to CDR. CDR refers to a service company's ethical and fair use of data and technology within its digital service ecosystem. It involves establishing standards, protecting customer privacy, conducting external audits and striving for an equitable power dynamic between service firms and their partners. Findings Despite the risks involved, many companies are not prioritizing good CDR practices. Financial benefits from the collection and use of consumer data, improved customer experience through AI-driven customization and personalization, cost reduction through service automation and the trade-offs between organizational goals and CDR practices can prevent companies from prioritizing good CDR practices. Originality/value This is one of the first articles in the service domain to take the concept of CDR and apply it to recent developments in generative AI. Research limitations/implications The emergence of powerful AI tools presents opportunities and challenges. Research opportunities include responsible business restructuring, responsible service automation to ensure fairness and human oversight, addressing dehumanization of service delivery, responsible customer profiling to address privacy and discrimination concerns and preventing AI misuse.

Corporate digital responsibility (CDR) in the age of AI: implications for interactive marketing

Abstract Corporate responsibility in Civil Engineering in the digital era is changing rapidly. An attempt is made to make CDR more “tangible” by assigning and defining entrepreneurial approaches. This paper investigates the relationship between CSR and CDR based on a structured literature analysis, Internet research and Hermeneutic approach. The study examines the status quo of existing methods for measuring CDR and proposes a practicable framework for measuring successfully practiced CDR. The paper investigates the value‐based use of digitization and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as crucial factors to derive new ways to shape and catalyze the industry's assumption of human, social and environmental responsibility. The study defines a new approach to a corporate strategy in order to make the fulfillment of CSR measurable and assessable with regard to the effects of digital technological innovations on human, society and environment, taking into account current Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) regulations and guidelines. 

How can corporate digital responsibility (<scp>CDR</scp>) be measured in line with corporate social responsibility (<scp>CSR</scp>)? A new theoretical approach in construction 4.0

Abstract This study explores the integration of sustainable technological innovation (STI) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) within the Spanish agricultural sector, aiming to enhance competitiveness and sustainability. Departing from previous research that often underrepresents the unique dynamics of this sector, our analysis employs both theoretical frameworks and empirical data to assess the interplay between STI and CSR. We develop a composite CSR indicator and analyze its association with regional R&amp;D + i investment across Spain. Findings indicate that STI adoption, particularly in precision agriculture and smart livestock management, significantly enhances CSR outcomes by optimizing resource utilization and minimizing environmental impact. However, notable regional disparities emerge, influenced by economic resources, infrastructure, and policy environments. This study contributes to the literature by elucidating the role of STI in fostering sustainable agricultural practices and underscores the necessity for targeted policy interventions to support regions lagging in CSR performance. The results advocate for integrating technological innovation with CSR strategies to ensure long‐term sustainability and competitiveness in the agricultural sector. 

Enhancing competitiveness and sustainability in Spanish agriculture: The role of technological innovation and corporate social responsibility

The architecture, engineering and construction industry (AEC) undergoes digital transformation, one of the major drivers for technical innovation and dynamism to all working processes. Emerging technologies were only used to a limited extent due to the lack of will to innovate and the unavailability of appropriate orientation guiding users with a more comprehensible framework. The research defined a new gap in scientific research with the concept of Corporate Digital Responsibility (CDR) in Construction 4.0—a term representing the digitization of the branch. The traditionally conservative, highly fragmented industry is predestined for this given the advanced technology, human potential and appreciation of values. Understanding the complex possibilities of innovation and recognizing the potential impact on the sustainability of buildings and the built environment promotes the adoption of corporate responsibility. The implementation of digital strategies, secured by an adapted legal framework, would accelerate the overall human, societal and digital transformation. This primary research investigates the challenges affecting the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The study highlights in which fields CDR can significantly catalyze innovation to achieve efficient, economic construction life cycles. The study used a mix of methods with a structured literature analysis and expert interview surveys enabling a critical-reflexive analysis of key factors. It evaluates the key tasks to master technological feasibility. By assessing multiple expert perspectives, the study takes stock of the acceptance of new technologies. The findings are expected to inspire corporates, researchers and practitioners across disciplines. Necessary corporate steps are outlined in the study to lay the path for defining their own digital strategy. The study shows that new research questions require a holistic approach.

Innovation Empowerment in Construction 4.0 by the Corporate Digital Responsibility (CDR)—Approach. A New Field of Scientific Research for the Digital Breakthrough

The digital transformation of the economy and society is fundamentally changing the possible value creation processes of companies. These changes increasingly involve the processing of personal data into information and knowledge that can be used to create individualised user experiences or gain insights from aggregated data. Customer relationships and the interconnectedness of customers are similarly changing as a result of this digital transformation. As customers become more demanding and involved, voluntary activities that go beyond compliance and regulation are becoming increasingly important. At the same time, companies are increasingly recognising the potential of privacy-friendly goods and services. They are using the heterogeneity of their offerings to develop unique selling propositions that focus on fulfilling their digital responsibilities (e.g., Apple, Samsung). In this way, digital responsibility fosters innovation in goods, services and digital markets. The voluntary responsibility of companies in dealing with digital technologies and creating value from data is discussed under the term 'corporate digital responsibility' (CDR). This young field of research has its origins in the study of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and is often discussed in that context. However, with the growing importance of digital responsibility for organisations and the proliferation of related activities, it is increasingly establishing itself as a discipline in its own right. Correspondingly, research on CDR has also seen a sharp increase in the number of publications since 2019. The paper evaluates existing research approaches in a systematic literature review. It highlights definitional approaches, approaches to describing the entrepreneurial motivation for CDR activities and their consequences for corporations, their business relationships and society. Further, the paper identifies research gaps of CDR and provides a basis for further research. This paper shall also serve as a starting point for organisations to establish their own efforts in this area, as well as for the evaluation of existing activities.

Corporate Responsibility for Digital Innovation: A systematic Review of the Literature

Abstract Corporate digital responsibility (CDR) is a recently developing new management concept in response to the increasing challenges caused by digital transformation. In Germany, this self-governance approach influenced the political discussions and led to a more integrative and collaborative multi-policy strategy beyond pure regulatory regimes. The launch of the German CDR-code by the German action group in June 2021 is a milestone to capture ethical problems in digitalised firms by voluntary commitments from signatories. However, little empirical evidence on the current state of CDR-initiatives at German corporations is available up-to now. This article addresses the identified research gap by performing a qualitative analysis of the disclosed information on CDR in nonfinancial reports of the DAX 30 companies from 2020. After a brief introduction, a literature review on CDR-related research activities is presented in Sect. 2, and the context and background of the study are specified. Section 3 presents the results of the empirical study on disclosed CDR-related information by German DAX 30 companies. Section 4 concludes with a discussion and discovers future research avenues on CDR. Corporate responsibility in the digital economy is a field of research that is open for different disciplines and especially theoretical normative research on CDR should be accelerated.
