Formal decision-making methods can be used to help improve the overall sustainability of industries and organisations. Recently, there has been a great proliferation of works aggregating sustainability criteria by using diverse multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques. A number of review papers summarising these techniques have been published. During the past few years, new approaches for hybrid MCDM (HMCDM) methods have been developed, but they have not yet been completely reviewed. This article aims to fill this gap and to summarise publications related to the application of HMCDM. The current study is limited solely to papers available in the Thomson Reuters Web of Science Core Collection database. It is commonly accepted that the majority of maritime causalities are caused by human factors/errors. The role of human factor in maritime accident and the possible reasons of this argument can be quantitatively evaluated based on expert knowledge and multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) methodology. To investigate what makes the first “human factor” in ship accidents, a hybrid approach was applied in this study. Two methods, the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and the analytical network process (ANP) were proposed to evaluate the importance level of the human factors in maritime casualties. Quantitative evaluations of the human errors in maritime operations can greatly improve the decision-making process and reduce potential risks. As a result of this study, the top three priorities in the evaluation systems were found as: ‘ability, skills, knowledge’ (8.94%), ‘physical condition’ (8.77%), ‘weather - sea conditions’ (8.21%) and the least important criterion was ‘cargo characteristics’ (2.21%).

Strategic Approach Model for Investigating the Cause of Maritime Accidents

Occupational accidents on board criteria determining is a challenging procedure in shipping industry as the ideal safety ship management strategy depends on many factors involving in shipping transportation There are many legislations, agreements and practices to obtain series of security measures in order to ensure safety and security of seafarers. Causes of on‐board occupational accidents need to be evaluated in a correct manner to regulate more functional practices and also to lower the on‐board accident rates. However, causes of on‐board accidents can be extremely complex. Therefore, scientific methods should be used to evaluate the causes and to determine the measures to be taken. The evaluation of the parameters is of great importance for the future of the maritime sector and in terms of development. In this study, factors have been identified that lead to seafarers’ occupational accidents on board and we tried to present alternative solutions which can be applied on this issue. Severity of the reasons that led to the accidents and their relationships with each other are identified to be able to sort through the alternative solutions with a model using the fuzzy AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) method approach. Ships have an important role in among the factors causing marine pollution. Marine pollution by ships damages sea life, which effects human health indirectly, in addition it restricts usage of sea for different purposes.  Increasing  comprehensive  and  compelling  liabilities  related with  environmental  components  and subjects day by day are expected results for environmental science and engineering applications according  to 60%  of  our  responsibilities  of  European  Union  Integration  development.  In  today’s’  world,  where  global warming is an issue of high priority and makes us feel its impacts in our  lives,  leaving a  livable world to the next generations  is now a primary goal  for all. Investigation of Marine Pollution Caused by Ship Operations with DEMATEL Method

Cargo type selection is a challenging procedure in shipping and logistic industry as net freight charge profit depends on many factors involving in maritime transportation. Maximisation of the net profit is subject to determination of the factors affecting the freight account. In this study, the problem of cargo type selection was investigated for the dry bulk ship companies by using fuzzy multi criteria decision-making approaches. The evaluation process is based on identifying criteria sets and ranking them according to factor loads using fuzzy AHP and finally deciding on the best alternative that is scored by the experts using fuzzy TOPSIS technique. Results of the study revealed that the most important criteria for dry bulk cargo selection are net freight charge profit (9.85%), cargo handling conditions (6.35%), total fuel consumption per voyage (5.96%), risk of piracy and stowaways (5.08%), position for the next voyage (4.87%) and cargo handling cost (4.74%).
