TL;DR: A regulatory loop is described in which brain networks challenged by cognitive tasks drift into functional hypoxia that drives—via neuronal EPO synthesis—neurodifferentiation and dendritic spine formation, which suggests a model of neuroplasticity in form of a fundamental regulatory circle.
Hippocampal neurons respond to brain activity with functional hypoxia.

Miskowiak,Klaus-Armin Nave,Hannelore Ehrenreich +20 more
TL;DR: In this article, a refined transgenic approach in mice, utilizing the oxygen-dependent degradation (ODD) domain of HIF-1α fused to CreERT2 recombinase, allows them to demonstrate hypoxic cells in the performing brain under normoxia and motor-cognitive challenge, and spatially map them by light-sheet microscopy, all in comparison to inspiratory hypoxia as strong positive control.
CaMKIIα Expressing Neurons to Report Activity-Related Endogenous Hypoxia upon Motor-Cognitive Challenge.

TL;DR: In this article, the functional hypoxia of excitatory pyramidal neurons was found to be a local and brain-wide reaction mediating adaptive neuroplasticity.
Brain erythropoietin fine-tunes a counterbalance between neurodifferentiation and microglia in the adult hippocampus
Laura Fernandez Garcia-Agudo,Agnes A. Steixner-Kumar,Yasmina Curto,Nadine Barnkothe,Imam Hassouna,Sebastian Jähne,Umer Javed Butt,Katharina Grewe,Martin S. Weber,Kim N. Green,Silvio O. Rizzoli,Juan Nacher,Klaus-Armin Nave,Hannelore Ehrenreich +13 more
TL;DR: The authors showed that EPO upregulation and stimulated neurodifferentiation, either by functional or inspiratory hypoxia, microglia numbers decrease, and suggested that during accelerating neuronal differentiation, EPO acts as regulator of the CSF1R-dependent micro-glia.
Inducing sterile pyramidal neuronal death in mice to model distinct aspects of gray matter encephalitis.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used adult male NexCreERT2xRosa26-eGFP-DTA mice for the induction of a sterile encephalitis by diphtheria toxin-mediated ablation of cortical and hippocampal pyramidal neurons which also recruits immune cells into gray matter.
