Abstract This article reviews five decades of English and French literature on transit safety in several major databases, with the focus on Scopus and ScienceDirect. The review explores the nature and frequency of transit crime and passengers’ safety perceptions in transport nodes and along the trip using bibliometric analysis and a systematic review of the literature. The number of retrieved documents was 3137, and 245 were selected for in-depth analysis. Transit safety as a research area took off after the mid-1990s and peaked after the 2010s. The body of research is dominated by the English-language literature (mostly large cities), with a focus on the safety of rail-bound environments and examples of interventions to improve actual and perceived safety for public transportation (PT) users. Highlighting the importance of transit environments along the whole trip, the article also helps advocate for more inclusion of passengers’ safety needs and the involvement of multiple stakeholders in implementing PT policies.

Crime and safety in transit environments: a systematic review of the English and the French literature, 1970–2020

Problem: Suicide is a dominating, although hidden, safety problem on Swedish railroads. The aim of this paper is to describe the epidemiology of fatal train-person collisions as a basis for systems-oriented prevention. Method: Data on collision circumstances were collected from narrative reports at the Swedish National Rail Administration. Results: The events were evenly distributed by months and weekdays, however most suicides occur in day-time while unintentional events usually occur at night. Most train-person collisions happened in densely populated areas, and 75 % of the suicide victims were waiting on the track before the collision. Significance test between types of injury event (suicide, accident or unknown intent) showed small or no differences. Conclusion: Traditional approaches to accident prevention by systems modification seem largely applicable to combat railroad suicide as well. Impact on industry: Our findings show promising preventive potentials

Suicides and other fatalities from train-person collisions on Swedish railroads: a descriptive epidemiologic analysis as a basis for system-oriented prevention

Background: Trespassing at train tracks and “person under train” (PUT) incidents are serious health, societal and transportation concerns. There is a need for developing different measures to prevent these events. Here, we hypothesized that platform-end lengthwise fences (PLF) reduce trespassing, the number of PUT incidents (suicides and accidents), and train traffic delays. Method: PLFs were installed as the intervention at one station in Stockholm in 2020. The number of trespassers detected using CCTV-cameras was compared before and after at the intervention station over a total period of 29 months (using incidence rate ratio, IRR). The reduction in the number of PUT (over 20 years) and train traffic delays (over 9 years) was also investigated by IRR, and by using three control groups. Results: After installation of PLF there was a significant ∼90 % reduction in trespasses (IRR = 0.10, 95 %CI 0.04–0.23; one-sided exact p < 0.0001). No PUT incident occurred at the intervention station after the installation, compared to 1.11 per year before installation (IRR = 0.32, 95 %CI 0–1.82; one-sided exact p = 0.1216). There was a significant reduction in delay minutes post installation compared to before the installation (Mann Whitney U = 0, upper one-sided exact p = 0.0357). The effect of the PLF was also observable in comparison to the three control groups, suggesting that the preventive effect was not due to wider societal events affecting all stations. Conclusion: PLF had a large effect on reducing the number of trespasses and the number of delay minutes due to trespasses and PUT incidents. PLF may also have an effect of reducing PUT incidents. Practical Applications: PLF is deemed to be relatively easy and cheap to install and thus scalable (as compared to full barriers, e.g., platform screen doors) and may be considered at platform-ends having an exit, provided there is enough space to install them.

Classroom Surveillance System is an excellent system for higher learning institutions to ensure the security of students, faculty, office personnel, and its physical facilities. This study aimed to develop a classroom surveillance system for campus security and productivity. The study utilized developmental research. There were four Deans, 24 IT professionals, and 24 students utilized as respondents of the study. The instrument used in the study included the Deans’ monitoring scheme of teaching/non-teaching personnel, school facilities, and student’s assessment on the surveillance functionality, reliability, usability, efficiency, maintainability, and accuracy of the newly developed and designed classroom surveillance system. The statistical tools used were the frequency count, ranking, and weighted mean. The study revealed that the developed Classroom Surveillance System was very much functional, very much reliable, very much usable, very much efficient, very much maintainable, and very much accurate. The university administration should adopt the Classroom Surveillance System to provide excellent surveillance and monitoring of teaching personnel, non-teaching personnel, classroom facilities, and students of the University. Hence, the university should shift from utilizing the traditional surveillance system into a technologically oriented surveillance system.

Development and Usability Assessment of Classroom Surveillance System for Campus Security and Productivity

Introduction We explore the use of CCTV footage to map suicidal self-injurious behavior on a subway platform to better understand the settings and the situational conditions of individuals just before they attempt suicide. Methods We use footage from CCTV cameras for gaining new insight into the situational conditions that relate to suicidal self-directed violence in the transit system in Stockholm, Sweden. We adopt a space-time budget template to record, step-by-step, what happens over time as individuals on the platform wait for an incoming train. The analysis applies visualization tools (VISUAL-TimePAcTS) and uses a cross-over design to identify risk factors associated with suicide. Results Findings show that suicide risk varies both temporally and spatially. Among all types of possible behaviors and places, being close to the edge of the platform of the opposite direction of the train and crossing the security line – this behavior and place combined – are associated with increased risk of suicide. Conclusions We confirm that using CCTV footage as data source provides valuable insight into relevant situational conditions in which suicides take place, which can be useful to inform prevention strategies, particularly information about behavior and place combined. The article concludes by reflecting upon the importance of these results for future research.
