Mangrove forests are paramount for sustaining and enhancing ecosystem services benefitting both local and regional communities, and the global environment. Scholars have long studied the values of ecosystem services of mangrove forests. However, the number of recent primary studies monetizing ecosystem services is rather limited. This paper ascertains the values of ecosystem services of 66 primary valuation studies with a total of 250 observations. The results indicate that the range of values is substantially wide. This range cannot be explained sufficiently by the various differences of the studies, as the explanatory power of the econometric estimations is low. Main influential factors on the values of ecosystem services are the elicitation methods, the types of ecosystem services considered, and the conservation status of the respective mangrove forest as Ramsar site. The results stress the significant economic values of ecosystem services of mangrove forests and the importance for conservation management. However, the results also caution against a direct transfer of benefits between sites. The substantial variety of site and country specifics warrants the implementation of separate, original valuation studies.

Conservation Management of Planted Mangroves through Evaluating Ecosystem Services in Baros Village Bantul Regency, Indonesia

The Baros mangrove forest in Bantul Regency is now beginning to develop. Many government and private sectors programs are rolled out to support its development. The development of the Baros mangrove forest must be in accordance with the rules of conservation so that it will not damage the mangrove ecosystem. Mangrove forest has high economical and ecological value but is very vulnerable if lack of wisdom in maintaining, preserving and managing them. The involvement of government and other stakeholders are essential in determining management policies. Unawareness of society and the government to the importance of mangrove ecosystem can cause development of it becomes uncontrolled, consequently can destroy it. Mangrove forests are an important natural resource in coastal environments, and have three main functions: physical, biological, and economic functions. To quantify the functions of mangrove forests as the basis to determine the policy is required a research instrument called economic valuation. The approach of this study is the literature review from various studies before to perceive the influence of economic valuation in determining the management strategy of Baros mangrove forest in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

The community project to plan mangrove in downstream of Opak-OyaRiver has attracted the growing of various socio-economic activities. The objective of the research is to calculate the total economic values of mangrove ecosystem. The study was conducted in BarosBantul Regency on September to October 2013. The numbers of 41 farmers, 10 fishers, 9 cattlemans and 34 tourists were interviewed to find out the economic values of mangrove ecosystem. The study indicated the total economic benefits of mangrove area was IDR168.744.141,67/ha/year, which consist of IDR19.756.491,67/ha/year for direct benefits, IDR132.017.160,00/ha/year for indirect benefits, IDR170.490,00/ha/year for optional benefits and IDR16.800.000,00/ha/year for existence benefits. The indirect economic benefit of mangrove area was higher. It shows that ecological functions of mangrove played a greater benefits and the action to conserve and expand the mangrove area are extremely needed. The sustainability of the mangrove and management based on ecology might remain as appropriate way to do in the futur
