Influence of Race, Gender, Age, and Diabetes on the Skin Circulation

Background: This study aimed to determine the association of particulate matters with endothelial function, measured by flow mediated dilation (FMD) of brachial artery, in children with or without exposure to secondhand smoke. Methods: This cross- sectional study was conducted from January to March 2011 in Isfahan, which is the second large and air-polluted city in Iran. The areas of the city with lowest and highest air pollution were determined, and in each area, 25 prepubescent boys with or without expo- sure to daily tobacco smoke in home were selected, i.e. 100 children were studied in total. Results: FMD was significantly smaller in those living in high-polluted area and those exposed to secondhand smoke. Multiple linear regression analysis, adjusted for age and body mass index, showed that both passive smoking status and living area in terms of particulate air pollution were effective deter- minants of the brachial artery diameter. The standardized coefficient of passive smoking status was 0.36 (SD = 0.09, P < 0.0001) showing negative association with percent increase in FMD. Likewise, the percent increase in brachial artery diameter was lower in passive smoker children. Similar relationship was documented for PM10 concentration with a regression coefficient of 0.32 (SD = 0.04, P < 0.0001). Without considering passive smoking variable, PM10 concentration has significant independent effect on FMD level. Conclusion: Our findings provide evidence on the association of environmental factors on endothelial dysfunction from early life. Studying such associations among healthy children may help identify the underlying mechanisms. The clinical implications of environmental factors on early stages of atherosclerosis should be confirmed in longitudinal studies.

Influence of Race, Gender, Age and Diabetes on Blood Flow

Background
This study sought to determine pulmonary vascular volumes (PVVs) on low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) in a healthy male Chinese population and analyze the effects of aging and smoking on PVVs.


Methods
A total of 1,320 healthy male participants (comprising 720 non-smokers, 445 smokers, and 155 ex-smokers) who underwent LDCT were retrospectively included in this study. Their demographic data and smoking status data were collected. An automatic integration segmentation approach for LDCT was used to segment pulmonary vessels semi-automatically. The PVVs of the whole lung, left lung, and right lung on LDCT were calculated, and correlations between PVVs and age and smoking status were then compared.


Results
The inter-rater correlation coefficient of the whole lung, left lung, and right lung PVVs was 0.98 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.95-0.99], 0.97 (95% CI: 0.93-0.98), and 0.97 (95% CI: 0.94-0.99), respectively. The intra-class correlation coefficient of the whole lung left lung, and right lung PVVs was 0.98 (95% CI: 0.95-0.99), 0.96 (95% CI: 0.95-0.99), and 0.96 (95% CI: 0.92-0.98), respectively. In non-smokers, PVVs decreased with age. The PVVs of heavy smokers were higher than those of light smokers, ex-smokers, and non-smokers. The PVVs of ex-smokers were comparable to those of light smokers.


Conclusions
The PVVs measured on LDCT tended to decrease with age in healthy male non-smokers gradually. Compared to non-smokers, the PVVs of smokers increased, even with the normal lung function.

Quantification of pulmonary vessel volumes on low-dose computed tomography in a healthy male Chinese population: the effects of aging and smoking

UNLABELLED Chronic exposure to cigarette smoke on guinea-pigs induced a muscularization of pulmonary arterioles and endothelial dysfunction might be an early trigger of this vascular remodelling. Accordingly, the present study was aimed to evaluate the effect of a 12 weeks exposure to passive smoking on the pulmonary endothelial vasomotor function. MATERIAL AND METHOD Vasodilator response of pulmonary arteries rings isolated in organ bath, precontracted with phenylephrine, was compared in the presence of cumulative doses (10(-9) to 10(-4) M) of endothelial-dependent (acetylcholine, ACh and adenosine-diphosphate, ADP) and independent vasodilators (sodium nitroprusside, SNP), respectively. RESULTS Our results suggest that chronic exposure of guinea-pigs to cigarette smoke induces the impairment only of NO-mediated endothelial response (vasodilation was 9.83 +/- 4.36 % for ACh 10(-5)M vs. 39.72 +/- 16.61 % in control, p = 0.005, respectively 36.64 +/- 7.21 % for ADP 10(-5)M vs. 55.53 +/- 13.51 %, p = 0.02). CONCLUSION The in vitro study of pulmonary arteries vasomotor function in guinea pigs chronically exposed to cigarette smoke may represent a reliable and relevant experimental model for the assessment of pulmonary endothelial dysfunction in early stages of COPD.
